Wind River Helps Equipment Manufacturer Lead Digital Transformation of Fire Trucks

Waterous, the world leader in water pumps for firefighting, partners with Wind River and Intel to develop intelligent, connected fire trucks for the Internet of Things

Waterous is the leading provider of water pumps for fire trucks, which have historically been operated mechanically and manually. The company saw an opportunity to bring firefighting into the digital age.

Waterous wanted to build the industry’s first digital, touch-screen control panel for its advanced trucks. Longer-term, the company saw an opportunity to bring Internet of Things (IoT) intelligence and connectivity to fire truck fleets and integrate them with “smart city” infrastructure.

The Wind River® and Intel® portfolio of ready-made software, including Wind River Linux, addressed the full scope of security, communications, reliability, and management capabilities the new system required. Wind River support services also helped significantly shorten ramp-up time for the development team.

Under tight time constraints, Waterous successfully launched the new control system, called Tellurus, and is now leveraging IoT connectivity with Wind River Helix Device Cloud, a cloud-based platform for managing large-scale device deployments. Waterous sees a critical competitive advantage with its ability to provide superior customer service remotely via Device Cloud. Waterous now has the foundation for bringing IoT and smart city capabilities to fire departments and governments in cities throughout the world.
