Jerry Fiddler, a former researcher at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, starts Wind River in a Berkeley, California, garage.
1987
Wind River introduces VxWorks®, the first real-time operating system (RTOS) with the ability to communicate across computer networks. VxWorks goes on to become the de facto industry standard.
1997
VxWorks becomes the first and only RTOS on Mars.
2000
Wind River acquires its first open source technology company, Berkeley Software Designs, signaling a shift to a dual-OS business model.
2004
Wind River enters the embedded Linux market and announces plans for a Carrier Grade Linux platform targeting the communications infrastructure industry.
2006
Wind River acquires Interpeak, adding the embedded networking stack to its portfolio and enabling next-generation devices to connect securely to the Internet.
2009
Wind River is acquired by Intel®, becoming a wholly owned subsidiary and part of its Software and Services Group.
