Dental technology leader Sirona Dental Systems, Inc., maintains its competitive advantage by developing tools that give practicing dentists a professional edge. Its product line of extra-oral 2-D/3-D X-ray devices was a breakthrough, one the company wanted to cement by adding networking capability to send X-ray images to PCs to process and display. To ensure performance and reliability, the team knew they needed an RTOS. They also needed to develop their product fast.

Wind River® Platform for Medical Devices brought together the VxWorks RTOS, an embedded development suite, a core network stack, and robust security components. Added to this was support for the PowerPC architecture via custom board support packages. Fedegari is a leading vendor of medical sterilizing equipment, providing reliable and cost-effective solutions for pharmaceutical and medical devices required to comply with stringent international standards. Its goal was to develop a robust and versatile real-time process controller that could operate on commercial off-the-shelf hardware, for lower cost and greater flexibility with no compromise of performance.

VxWorks®, the industry-leading real-time operating system from Wind River®, provides the stable architecture that underlies reliable real-time monitoring and adjustment of temperature, humidity, pressure, and airflow to ensure consistent performance. Fedegari drew on Wind River expertise in industrial device software platforms to create a reliable and easily upgradable control system for its drug and medical device sterilizers.

THE RESULTS
Because the control software runs on a standard platform, Fedegari has the flexibility to create new control and communications modules to meet the needs of particular customers. This same architecture makes it possible to update sterilizer performance via software, prolonging the useful life of expensive sterilizing machines.
