Wind River Helps PATEO Create OS-Agnostic IVI System

Adding iOS connectivity to the Android automotive system

“The automobile is a complex environment. Introducing new software and capabilities is highly complicated. In order to deliver the highest quality and get to market quickly, it is critical to work with an expert like Wind River.”

—Kelvin Du, Vice President, PATEO

THE OBJECTIVE

Chinese automotive pioneer PATEO knew it needed to add iOS connectivity to their Android-based in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) system in order to reach the market of dedicated Apple fans. Staying in tune with consumers required acting fast. But PATEO also knew that cross-platform software engineering was not its special competency. In the face of tight deadlines, it turned to Wind River®.

HOW WIND RIVER HELPED

PATEO selected the Wind River Connectivity Solution Accelerator for Android to allow users to access multimedia content from popular iOS devices. The Wind River software enables external platforms to perform as if they were accessories to the docked Apple device and play content from it.

THE RESULTS

In a marketplace where infotainment platforms can be a deal breaker, Wind River helped PATEO add iOS connectivity to its IVI system quickly and safely, with no negative impact on the development schedule.

Video: KUKA chooses VxWorks SMP solution for KR C4

“Wind River has proven to be a reliable partner that delivers the right technology at the right time. With VxWorks, we were able to deliver our solution on time, with the quality our customers expect.”

—KUKA Robot Group

THE OBJECTIVE

With industrial robots, reliability is everything. When KUKA Robot Group wanted to introduce a new, more intelligent PC-based controller, the KR C4, the developers needed a software platform that could support multi-core processing. They wanted to integrate control systems that manage robot, motion, sequence, and process control. They also wanted to add functionality, including safety and connectivity. But the main challenge was to reduce hardware costs.

HOW WIND RIVER HELPED

Since 1996, KUKA has relied on the VxWorks® real-time operating system as the foundation for its robots. The company also leveraged Wind River® Professional Services to help accelerate its development.

THE RESULTS

The KR C4 represents a breakthrough on many fronts for KUKA—the first to consolidate control, HMI, and safety on a standard PC-based platform. VxWorks enabled the team to reduce costs and drive higher performance by replacing hardware-based functionality with software-based tasks. They developed an architecture in which multiple integrated controllers share a common database and infrastructure, with the scalability to handle multiple workloads of varying criticality. With VxWorks and a reliable partner in Wind River, KUKA was able to reduce its development risks and deliver an innovative product on time.

Wind River Delivers Platform Designed to Enable Smart Rail

FITSCO delivers safety-certified automated train signaling solution

Full case study

“Wind River is the ideal partner for us because they provide a holistic safety development approach.”

—Hao Wu, General Manager, FITSCO

THE OBJECTIVE

When Shanghai’s Fuxin Intelligent Transportation Solution Co., or FITSCO, undertook the development of its advanced Auto Train Protection system, the JeRail ATP-100, a key challenge was to pass SIL4 certification, which denotes the highest Safety Integrity Level. The systems that control critical operations such as speed, orientation, or door-locking need to meet stringent international safety standards.

HOW WIND RIVER HELPED

With more than 30 years of safety-critical software experience, only Wind River® could provide a comprehensive trusted systems platform for FITSCO. Wind River VxWorks® Cert Platform provided FITSCO developers with a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) platform for delivering applications certified to EN 50128. And Wind River Professional Services enacted a seamless integration of the VxWorks Cert Platform safety case—the documented demonstration that the product complies with safety requirements—into the ATP controller.

THE RESULTS

FITSCO not only met its SIL4 certification goal, but also did so on time and within budget. The entire project took FITSCO approximately two years to finish and the product received SIL4 certification. FITSCO shortened their time-to-market by three months, which is equivalent to a 12.5% improvement in their total project time.

Wind River Helps Siemens Cut Engineering Costs in Half and Beat Time-to-Market

Siemens Industrial PC chooses VxWorks to power its high-performance industrial PCs

Full case study

“With VxWorks we don’t have to develop or maintain our own operating system, so we can accelerate our time-to-market and roll out our products much faster than ever before. In fact, we were able to release our product four months ahead of schedule.”

—Anton Sauter, Product Manager SIMATIC IPC, Siemens Industrial PC Group

THE OBJECTIVE

Siemens is a market leader in industrial PCs. The company’s high-performance computers operate in extremely demanding environments, often directly on the plant floor. Siemens PCs needed a real-time operating system (RTOS) in order to execute tasks requiring determinism, fast response times, and safety. Until recently, the company used a homegrown RTOS, but it was difficult and costly to maintain. Siemens concluded it could eliminate a number of steps in development and save significant sums by replacing its in-house system with a proven commercial RTOS.

HOW WIND RIVER HELPED

Siemens concluded it could eliminate a number of steps in development and save significant sums by replacing its in-house system with a proven commercial RTOS. After exhaustive research, the Siemens Industrial PC Group determined that VxWorks® was the best choice of all the commercial RTOS options available—a proven solution with a long track record of success.

THE RESULTS

Safety and security were key deciding factors. Wind River® and VxWorks are proven in applications where safety, security, and reliability are critical, such as aerospace and defense. And Wind River software enjoys optimal compatibility with Intel® hardware, Siemens’ chip of choice. With VxWorks, Siemens cut engineering costs by 50% compared to its homegrown system and released its product four months ahead of schedule.
