Wind River Reinvents the Real-Time Operating System for the Internet of Things

The latest release of VxWorks® will further reinforce the company’s leadership in its traditional markets such as aerospace, defense, medical, and industrial, and also enable the company to extend its reach into emerging applications enabled by IoT.

Recognized as the industry-leading RTOS, VxWorks has been re-architected with a highly modular approach leading to the separation of the VxWorks core operating system from packages such as the file system or networking stack. As a result, individual applications can now be updated at any time without requiring a rework or retest of the entire system, increasing scalability and the ability to quickly adjust to market changes.

The latest release of VxWorks includes the following new features and enhancements:

  • Modularity: New modular approach allows customers to apply targeted, efficient upgrades to packages and protocols without changing the system core which minimizes testing and recertification efforts and allows customers to sustain their systems on the cutting edge of technology.

  • Security: Comprehensive set of built-in security features includes secure data storage, tamper proof design, secure upgrade, root of trust, and user and policy management.

  • Safety: Enhanced functionality to address the increasing need for safety applications in medical, industrial, transportation, aerospace and defense.

  • Scalability: A combination of the microkernel and the standard kernel, built on the same VxWorks platform, allows customers to reduce development and maintenance costs by leveraging one RTOS foundation across different classes of connected devices, from small-footprint consumer wearables to large networking equipment and everything in between.

  • Connectivity and Graphics: Support for a broad range of industry-leading standards and protocols such as USB, CAN, Bluetooth, FireWire, and Continua, as well as out-of-the-box, high-performance networking capabilities. The graphics ready platform includes a new highly efficient stack based on the published OpenVG™* API, hardware-assisted graphics drivers and the Tilcon graphics designer tool.


The company has also enhanced its Wind River Workbench suite of developer tools for VxWorks. The suite now includes a new state-of-the-art System Analysis package that provides instant detailed access to code and system behavior, allowing developers to simultaneously optimize their code and detect bugs, memory leaks, and interlocks.

Wind River and China Mobile Demonstrate NFV in Action at Mobile World Congress

MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS, BARCELONA, Spain — Feb. 24, 2014 — Wind River®, a world leader in delivering software for intelligent connected systems, has collaborated with China Mobile to develop a network functions virtualization (NFV) proof-of-concept showcasing a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) base station. The proof-of-concept will be demonstrated at Mobile World Congress 2014, and features Wind River Open Virtualization, a Type 2 hypervisor that delivers carrier grade open source real-time kernel virtualization running on an Intel-based server with a dedicated hardware accelerator.

The challenges typically associated with the NFV use case of a virtualized base station include the ability to reliability deliver low latency, high performance data processing in a near real time environment — while operating within a multi-application, virtualized environment. Using Wind River Open Virtualization, the proof-of-concept delivers a live demonstration of a successful C-RAN base station that delivers near native hardware performance, and closely follows the requirements of the ETSI NFV Industry Standards Group.

The virtualized C-RAN base stations run on Intel-based standard servers, virtualizing Layers 1, 2 and 3 functions. The demonstration highlights strict real-time execution and TD-LTE and GSM support. Through Wind River Open Virtualization, companies can quickly deploy commercial NFV applications such as a C-RAN with high performance and real-time virtualization, dramatically reducing time to market and operational expenses.

Wind River Unveils Industry’s First Commercial Carrier Grade Platform for NFV

MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS, BARCELONA, Spain — Feb. 24, 2014 — Wind River®, a world leader in delivering software for intelligent connected systems, has introduced Wind River Carrier Grade Communications Server, the industry’s first commercial carrier grade fully integrated and virtualized software platform. The solution is designed specifically for network functions virtualization (NFV) deployment and seamlessly integrates with existing networks.

"Carrier networks are evolving toward full virtualization of function, and central to this transformation is a platform that allows easy virtualization of applications while maintaining the core attributes of a carrier grade solution: availability, scalability, security and management," said Mike Langlois, general manager of the communications business for Wind River. "While many companies supplying enterprise IT solutions may claim they offer an NFV solution, without the ability to deliver on carrier grade, those products are not a true fit to successfully achieve NFV. Carrier grade has long been part of Wind River’s DNA."

A complete NFV solution, Wind River Carrier Grade Communications Server will enable operators to migrate their networks to NFV architectures while maintaining the carrier grade attributes they are known for. Customers can onboard and deploy NFV applications right out of the box, giving them a competitive jump-start in becoming NFV-ready.

Developed by telecom experts, Wind River Carrier Grade Communications Server is based on Wind River Open Virtualization with Wind River Linux, optimized real-time Kernel-Based Virtual Machine (KVM++), carrier grade enhancements to OpenStack®, and Intel® Data Plane Development Kit (Intel DPDK) accelerated vSwitch technologies.

A hard requirement for telecommunications, carrier grade is essential for operators and service providers as they cannot deploy applications unless they can do the following:

  • Maintain existing five “five 9s” or “six 9s” (99.999 to 99.9999%) reliability, translating to downtime as low as 30 seconds a year

  • Manage applications through their existing OSS/BSS/NMS systems

  • Provide significant scalability, especially as new device categories get attached to the network as part of the Internet of Things

  • Achieve the service level agreement (SLA) performance and security requirements they already guarantee their customers today with non-virtualized applications


A key value of NFV is the ability to run what used to be dedicated boxes on virtual machines on commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware. Wind River Carrier Grade Communications Server is optimized for and running on HP ProLiant servers and Intel® Xeon® processors for Communications Infrastructure Systems. Wind River is also working with HP to certify Wind River communications software on Network Equipment Building System (NEBS)-compliant HP ProLiant servers.

LSI and Wind River Announce Big Endian Support for Axxia Multicore ARM Processor Family

SAN JOSE, Calif., February 20, 2014 — LSI Corporation (NASDAQ: LSI) today announced its Axxia® multicore family of network communication processors and accelerators now include big endian BE8 mode support for the latest version of Wind River Linux. The availability of big endian support provides software developers with greater flexibility and choice in their hardware options.

LSI Axxia communication processors use ARM® Cortex-A15 cores that are designed to deliver both increased performance and power efficiency. Wind River Linux 6 includes expanded hardware support for these latest ARM 32 and 64 bit processors. Wind River to Create Carrier Grade NFV-Ready Server Platform with HP

Wind River Advancing Carrier Grade Cloud Infrastructures as a Corporate Sponsor of the OpenStack Foundation

Altera and Wind River Announce Strategic Partnership to Deliver Operating Systems and Development Tools Tailored for Altera SoC Platform

San Jose, Calif., February 5, 2014 — Altera Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR) and Wind River® today announced that as a result of their strategic partnership, the companies have developed and deployed tools and solutions for Altera’s SoC FPGA devices. Wind River’s industry-leading operating systems and development tools support Altera’s multi-core ARM™ processor-based SoC platforms.

By leveraging Wind River's embedded operating systems (VxWorks® real-time operating system and Wind River Linux) and Wind River Workbench development tools, software architects and developers can realize the full potential of Altera's multicore ARM-based SoC devices and design high-performance multi-core real-time systems. Wind River embedded operating systems and development tools are designed to support multi-core processor architectures and SMP (Symmetric Multi-Processing) with real-time optimizations. This includes Wind River Hypervisor virtualization technology that enables Linux and VxWorks to run simultaneously in an Asymmetric Multiprocessing (AMP) mode.
