Wind River Advances Open Source Innovation for Automotive with iOS Connectivity for Linux IVI Systems

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Wind River continues to grow open source in automotive by helping companies build in IVI support for popular consumer devices, while staying on time and on budget.

  • Using Wind River software, a car’s central IVI unit can perform like an accessory to view and play content from iOS devices.

  • Data can be streamed from the latest iOS devices such as iPhones and iPads.

AUTOMOTIVE LINUX SUMMIT, TOKYO, Japan – May 28, 2013 –
Wind River®, a world leader in embedded and mobile software, has introduced Wind River Connectivity Solution Accelerator for Linux, which allows consumers to connect their iOS devices to Linux-based in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems.

Consumers increasingly desire the integration of familiar consumer electronics, such as today’s popular iOS devices, wherever they go. Recent research from J.D. Power & Associates indicates that the number one technology sought by consumers in new cars is the ability to link their smartphones to the car.1

Wind River Connectivity Solution Accelerator for Linux enables the car’s IVI unit to act like an accessory to view and play content from an iOS device docked into the vehicle. After connecting to a consumer’s iOS device via Wind River software, the IVI unit can play multimedia content such as music and videos, and the car steering wheel can be used as a remote control. A wide variety of devices are supported, including iPhone®, iPad®, iPad mini, iPod, and iPod nano®.

"Consumers are incorporating personal devices into every facet of their lives; it is already happening in the automobile. In order to stay in step with the rapidly changing auto industry and its increasing adoption of open source technologies, companies must support a growing variety of devices and provide richer consumer electronics experiences while also upholding automotive requirements that protect against driver distraction,” said Georg Doll, vice president of automotive solutions at Wind River. “Drawing from decades of automotive and embedded technologies and open source expertise, we can help customers meet the demands of the market, no matter how complex, while keeping to their development schedules and budget."

The new software further expands existing Wind River iOS connectivity offerings, including Wind River Connectivity Solution Accelerator for Android, which allows Android-based IVI systems to view and play content from iOS devices.

Wind River will be presenting demonstrations of the Wind River Connectivity Solution Accelerators at the Automotive Linux Summit in Japan, May 27–28 at the Yocto Project™ booth.

The Wind River automotive portfolio also includes Wind River Platform for Infotainment, an IVI platform based on the Yocto Project open source development infrastructure. With decades of experience, Wind River automotive expertise covers a wide range of technologies and solutions, including GENIVI®, Android, Tizen IVI, and VxWorks®; tools such as Wind River Diab Compiler; and virtualization and hypervisor technologies. This diverse expertise allows Wind River to support the auto industry in virtually any project.
