Wind River Delivers New Solution for Software Defined Radio Applications

Latest VxWorks Release Enables Complete Software Defined Radio (SDR) Operating Environment; Supports Software Communications Architecture (SCA) Application Environment Profile (AEP) 2.2.1; and Announces Partnership with Communications Research Centre Canada and Objective Interface Systems

ALAMEDA, Calif. – January 11, 2006 – Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:WIND), the global leader in Device Software Optimization (DSO), today announced its solution for Software Defined Radio (SDR) applications, one of the industry’s most rapidly growing segments. With the recently released version of its VxWorks real-time operating system announced last month, Wind River enables a Software Communications Architecture (SCA) Operating Environment (OE) that helps shift from hardware-centric, proprietary radios, to software-controlled, reprogrammable, standards-based radios that offer maximum flexibility and value. With Wind River VxWorks 6.2, developers can build SCA-conformant software defined radios for use in Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS) and other implementations. These new radios can be quickly reconfigured to switch among different frequencies or channels (waveforms), and support the “triple play” in communications: voice, data and video.

“Wind River’s device software technology addresses critical interoperability challenges that currently exist in military and public safety communications systems, and will eventually help to drive significant cost out of the federal communications budget as economies of scale from COTS take over,” said John Fanelli, vice president of product management and planning, Wind River. “In addition, it enables compressed radio device footprints, serving all of the needs of a particular individual, whether a firefighter, police officer, or warfighter on the front lines.”

Wind River VxWorks 6.2 Commercial Grade Real-Time Platform
As announced last month, VxWorks 6.2 delivers the industry’s market-leading real-time device software platform, with the commercial-grade quality expected from a Wind River solution, including industry-leading development and run time technology, world-class professional services and global product support delivered via local technology experts, all from one trusted industry expert with over 20 years of experience. Specific enhancements to the VxWorks 6.2-based platform for Software Defined Radio include:

  • Secure, open-standard platforms:
VxWorks platforms provide a rock-solid foundation for the most demanding applications. Through the support of industry standards, Wind River ensures safe, secure interoperability within a device, as well as across a network of devices. New in this release is enhanced POSIX support for the JTRS SCA Application Environment Profile (AEP) 2.2.1, enabling developers to develop compliant SDR implementations. This release also includes new security capabilities and updates in network technology for IPv4 and IPv6 networks (such as firewall, openSSL, IPSEC) and web services (such as WS-Security).

  • Industry-standard, end-to-end security for every class of device:
VxWorks platforms provide extended security capabilities that begin at the core operating system level for stringent application and device security, extend outward on the network to provide secure wired or wireless connectivity, and enforce secure, authenticated, encrypted and validated data access.

Partnerships with Communications Research Centre Canada (CRC) and Objective Interface Systems
An SCA OE is not complete without the Core Framework and ORB solution. CRC's SCARI Software Suite provides the SCA Core Framework for implementing SDR along with a Component Development Library. SCARI implements the Software Communications Architecture (SCA), a foundational technology that uses ORBexpress, a real-time ORB from Objective Interface Systems, as the communications backbone. The SCARI Software Suite is based on version 2.2 of the Software Communications Architecture (SCA) specifications published by the U.S. Department of Defense JTRS.

“This partnership is an important step in further establishing CRC’s reputation as a world leader in Software Defined Radio technology,” said Claude Bélisle, acting vice president of satellite communications and radio propagation research at CRC. “The integration of CRC’s SCARI Software Suite with the recent release of VxWorks 6.2 allows us to offer additional options to SCA developers. We look forward to working with Wind River to ensure successful development of Software Defined Radio applications.”

“As the leader in real-time, embedded and high-performance communications middleware, Objective Interface has a long history of supporting Wind River's entire range of products. We are pleased to come together with Wind River in support of this Software Defined Radio Operating Environment," said Joseph Jacob, senior vice president, Objective Interface Systems. "Wind River’s market-leading VxWorks real-time operating system, coupled with the maturity of ORBexpress from Objective Interface, creates a solid, secure and high-performance foundation upon which the SCA Core Framework can be applied.”

Wind River Announces New Solution for Multiple Independent Levels of Security (MILS)

ALAMEDA, Calif. — January 11, 2006 — Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:WIND), the global leader in Device Software Optimization (DSO), today announced a new solution for aerospace and defense (A&D) to provide customers with support for Multiple Independent Levels of Security (MILS). This new secure VxWorks platform provides a comprehensive MILS environment to developers for rapid deployment of co-resident secure and non-secure applications on a single MMU-partitioned microprocessor.

As future defense systems become more network-centric, secure communication is increasingly vital. Near real-time information must be delivered when and where it is needed, in a single, understandable format. Data must be aggregated on a single device across various joint forces, from various federal agencies, various coalition partners, and various security classification levels. To achieve this integration, systems must be architected from the ground up to separate data by security level and restrict access only to those users who are authorized.

To address this emerging market, Wind River is announcing a secure VxWorks platform, based on MILS concepts for a Secure Real Time Operating System (SRTOS) and targeted for certification to Evaluation Assurance Level 7 (EAL7) of the Common Criteria for Information Technology Security Evaluation. This new SRTOS has the following key features:

  • Key MILS Capabilities:
VxWork’s SRTOS will consist of a secure kernel based on the Separation Kernel Protection Profile, security policy database, reference monitor, secure audit log, provisions for secure boot and secure delivery, middleware layer suitable for drivers, file system, network stack, and all other common MILS components.

  • Robust Application and System Partitioning:
Leveraging the proven, industrial experience of its VxWorks ARINC 653 product, Wind River’s secure VxWorks platform controls co-resident high and low security applications on a single microprocessor, using a time and space scheduler already reviewed by multiple safety auditors.

  • Rapid Configuration Tool:
This VxWorks platform is bundled with an application configuration tool that enables the insertion of new applications and partition configurations without time-consuming re-qualification and re-testing of the entire system.

  • Driver Flexibility:
To optimize both security and performance, MILS systems designers can place device drivers in kernel space, middleware partitions and/or application partitions.

  • Multiple Application Programmable Interfaces (APIs):
To enable MILS designers to optimize application performance, the secure VxWorks platform provides multiple APIs, from a low-level Core OS Interface Library (COIL) to higher-level APIs, including industry standard interfaces and middleware APIs.

Wind River Releases Comprehensive Device Software Platform for ARINC 653 Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA) Applications

ALAMEDA, Calif. — January 11, 2006 — Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:WIND), the global leader in Device Software Optimization (DSO), today announced the release of Wind River® VxWorks 653 v2.1, its enhanced ARINC 653 IMA platform for safety-critical systems. Delivering new enhanced safety and architecture features, Wind River’s ARINC 653 device software platform now enables A&D device manufacturers to develop and maintain safety-critical, standards-based, integrated modular applications faster and more reliably.

“A&D systems are continuing a rapid shift towards standards-based operations and, at the same time, manufacturers are being asked to deliver increasingly complex products, with higher quality, on budget and on schedule,” said John Fanelli, vice president of product management and planning at Wind River. “Customers need proven solutions that provide for ease of certification and the security to ensure their devices are always interoperable, reliable and reusable. With approximately 40,000 developers using Wind River’s platforms, our new enhancements are continued proof of our leadership in delivering a fast, easy, standards-based development platform for commercial and military devices, while also reducing costs.”

Low-Risk, Cost-Effective DO-178B Certification for Partitioned Systems
As A&D devices increasingly connect into larger systems, the certification process, while time consuming and often extremely costly, is crucial to ensuring that device software applications comply with industry safety standards. Standard Application Programmable Interfaces (APIs) also provide application portability, and code re-use, as well as insurance that today’s systems will run well into tomorrow — an important consideration as A&D systems’ lifecycles are often greater than 20 years. To address this challenge, Wind River now provides the following features and functionality:

  • A Complete, Eclipse-Based Development Environment for ARINC 653:
Wind River’s Platform for Safety Critical (PSC) for ARINC 653 is now fully integrated into the Workbench development environment, enabling the use of the industry-standard Eclipse workspace for ARINC 653 software development and deployment.

  • Updated DO-178B Level A Certification Artifacts:
Wind River A&D product offerings now include updated versions of all required documentation to support DO-178B Level A, B, C, and D certification of operating systems. Certification evidence is delivered as a complete package on DVD in an advanced hyperlinked format for easy navigation and traceability, easing the time and expense required by certification services. This robust packaging of certification artifacts can also be used as a basis for IEC 61508 and FDA 510 (k) device certifications serving all SIL and medical device class levels.

  • DO-178B Qualified Tools:
Wind River is announcing new DO-178B qualified monitoring tools to collect required DO-178B system and application performance data with near-zero intrusion. These monitoring tools support debug and test-for-credit in the certification environment and can be utilized in deployed systems to analyze systems on the ground. These tools monitor key system parameters like CPU time, memory usage, and ARINC ports. The optimized and automatic data collection provided via these tools helps ease the time-intensive certification process especially in complex MMU-partitioned application environments.

  • XML Configuration Tool for Device Certification for IMA:
A new, powerful XML-based system for expressing ARINC 653 configuration data provides a sharp reduction in the certification and configuration costs of ARINC 653 systems. This DO-178B qualified development tool verifies correct compilation of ARINC 653 configuration data, thereby eliminating substantial rework and test for system updates and changes. In addition, this tool uniquely supports the separation of the roles of Platform Provider, System Integrator, and Application Developer, as required by the DO-297 IMA Development Guidance and Certification Issues document. This separation permits development teams from different subcontractors working on different IMA applications to easily make asynchronous deliveries to the system integrator, without triggering massive re-testing of the entire system.

“This DO-178B qualified development tool supports the deployment and maintenance of complex ARINC 653 systems. It improves confidence in the integrated system, thereby reducing time-to-flight,” states George Romanski, chief executive officer of Verocel. “By controlling and isolating changes to configuration records, system verification and re-verification costs are substantially reduced.”
