Wind River Named "Cool Vendor" by Leading Analyst Firm

ALAMEDA, Calif. — April 6, 2005 — Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:WIND), the global leader in Device Software Optimization (DSO), today announced that it has been included in the list of "Cool Vendors" in the "Cool Vendors in Application Development, 2005" report, published March 30, 2005 by Matt Light, Theresa Lanowitz and Joseph Feiman of Gartner, Inc.

According to the report, "Because companies are under increasing pressure to build more intelligent and connected devices, it is a fundamental requirement that device software be developed more quickly and efficiently, with more reliability while controlling cost. In an embedded systems environment, developers must manage a variety of silicon architectures, middleware and development tools, and operating systems. DSO offers a complete integrated development environment (IDE) and the ability to commercialize market-specific middleware."

"We believe that Gartner's decision to name Wind River as a 'cool vendor' is particularly significant, as it confirms the industry shift toward Device Software Optimization," said Ken Klein, president, chairman and CEO, Wind River. "Embedded grew up. It became DSO, and we at Wind River will continue to drive the industry forward and deliver state-of-the-art device software optimization solutions to our customers."

Wind River offers a complete line of solutions for DSO. Wind River Workbench, the industry's only Eclipse-based integrated development suite, supports both Wind River's VxWorks operating system and Linux. Wind River also brings to the industry the first fully integrated Platforms, a complete set of tools and technologies that provide customers with a reliable foundation on which they can build high-value applications to get their products to market on time.

About Gartner's Cool Vendors Selection Process
Gartner's listing does not constitute an exhaustive list of vendors in any given technology area, but rather is designed to highlight interesting, new and innovative vendors, products and services. Gartner defines a cool vendor as a company that offers technologies or solutions that are: Innovative, enable users to do things they couldn’t do before; Impactful, have, or will have, business impact (not just technology for the sake of technology); Intriguing, have caught Gartner's interest or curiosity in approximately the past six months.
