Wind River General Purpose Platform, VxWorks Edition and Wind River Linux provide developers with Device Software Optimization (DSO). Both platforms are tightly integrated with Wind River Workbench, the premier, open device-software development suite, and are backed by Wind River's 25 years of device software experience, a broad network of hardware and software partners, a world-class support organization, and a specialized professional services team.

General Purpose Platform, VxWorks Edition and Wind River Linux serve as a solid foundation for the development of a variety of devices, from aerospace and defense (A&D) applications to networking and consumer electronics gear, robotics and industrial applications, precision medical instruments, and navigation and telematics systems in automobiles. The systems have been successfully deployed in millions of devices by leading companies worldwide, including NASA's Mars Rover. If you require additional industry-specific run-time components, Wind River's platforms and profiles may be a good fit for your business.

Wind River Linux 3.0 comes with all the features and hardware support of the previous platform editions in one single product and replaces the previous Linux editions of General Purpose Platform, Wind River Platform for Consumer Devices, and Wind River Platform for Networking Equipment. This provides customers with more flexibility and reduces purchasing and licensing complexity. Wind River Linux 3.0 comes with a set of preconfigured system profiles that make it easy to jump-start device-specific development and allow device manufacturers to bring their products to market easier, faster, and more cost-effectively than ever before.

Features

Key features and functionality include the following:

  • Linux run-time: Wind River Linux is an optimized Linux develop-and-run solution for use in a wide range of devices. Based on Linux kernel 2.6.27 and GCC 4.3, Wind River Linux comes with more than 500 software packages, including multimedia, graphic, and HMI (human-machine interface) technologies. It offers a broad range of board support packages (BSPs) optimized for all leading CPU architectures, enhanced real-time and networking capabilities, and sophisticated multicore features such as virtualization and multicore offload.
  • VxWorks run-time: General Purpose Platform, VxWorks Edition is ideally suited for devices requiring a highly scalable, hard real-time, deterministic run-time environment. The platform includes a comprehensive networking stack that features Wind River Advanced Networking Technologies, enhanced memory protection, error management, and POSIX compliance. The latest edition is also backward-compatible with earlier versions of VxWorks, allowing customers to leverage existing and legacy software assets. Asymmetric multiprocessing (AMP) and symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) support is now available for all VxWorks 6.7–based platforms through the VxWorks 6.7 Multiprocessing optional add-on product.
  • Wind River Workbench: An integrated development suite based on the Eclipse framework, Workbench provides deep capabilities that support the entire development life cycle, from hardware bring-up to platform and application development, and enables standardization on one common development suite across the enterprise. Workbench is extensible and scalable, allowing developers to meet specific project needs, and it can seamlessly integrate hundreds of third-party plug-ins
  • Extensive partner technologies: To ensure a complete range of integrated technologies, Wind River has established the DSO industry's widest-ranging partner ecosystem, joining forces with leading hardware and software providers to address such technologies as advanced file systems, level 2 and 3 networking protocols, advanced graphics, reference designs, and board support packages (BSPs).
