Wind River Chosen by EADS as Device Software Standard

  • Wind River has signed a contract with EADS, the second largest aerospace and defense company worldwide
  • Wind River continues to build strong partnership by supplying EADS with technology to optimize the device software development process

Alameda, Calif.–July 26, 2004–Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: WIND), the global leader in device software optimization (DSO), today announced that it signed a strategic agreement with EADS, the largest aerospace company in Europe and the second largest worldwide. Under this agreement, Wind River will continue to deliver its Platforms to various EADS business units. This agreement illustrates Wind River’s commitment to enable its customers to standardize the device software development process.

Aerospace manufacturers are increasingly challenged by complex, software- development environments, which can result in budget overages, missed market windows and failed products. By selecting Wind River, EADS will standardize its device software development and focus on the features and functionality that differentiate its offerings from competitors. Under Wind River’s subscription-based business model, EADS can streamline its device development across the enterprise, freeing up time, money and resources.

"EADS has worked with Wind River on multiple projects where we required an efficient, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) solution that wouldn't fail under pressure," said Michel Gendron, senior purchasing manager at MBDA, a subsidiary of EADS. "By engaging with Wind River using their subscription based licensing model, we can leverage their technology across multiple projects, allowing us to increase development efficiencies while also providing our customers with superior products.”

“The transition of EADS to our subscription based licensing model illustrates that device software is strategic to EADS’ business," said Andreas Pabinger, vice president EMEA for Wind River. "Now, EADS can easily access additional Wind River technology year after year, and their developers can standardize their software development processes across the enterprise.”

Wind River Platform for Safety Critical ARINC 653 Selected by EADS/CASA - the Spanish Aerospace Division of EADS

  • Selected by EADS/CASA for its new air-to-air refueling boom system project
  • Wind River is the only company with a Platform that is ARINC 653 Supplement 1 compliant

Alameda, Calif.-July 26, 2004-Wind River Systems [NASDAQ: WIND], the global leader in device software optimization (DSO), today announced that EADS/CASA’s Military Transport Aircraft Division (MTAD), selected Wind River Platform for Safety Critical ARINC 653 as the device software foundation for its new boom air-to-air refueling technology (ARBS). Wind River was selected because it is the only device software vendor with a Platform that is ARINC 653 Supplement 1 compliant. It is also the only company to offer a flexible licensing model, allowing EADS and its divisions to develop mission critical applications better, faster at a lower cost and more reliably.

“This new application will provide the Airbus family with a high quality, flexible, low risk and cost-effective technology that will meet short and mid term military tanking transport requirements. Wind River’s unflagging commitment to safety critical application development and certification made them an ideal fit for this boom control application,” said E. Martin, MTAD Systems software manager. “With Platform for Safety Critical ARINC 653, we have the complete foundation required to build and certify our application.”

MTAD is responsible for all military transport aircraft derivatives within EADS, including the Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT). The A330 MRTT is derived from EADS’ Airbus A330 aircraft, which is the leader in its commercial market segment. With Wind River, MTAD is developing the control software for the new tail boom that will enable
air-to-air refueling.

The device software that will control these mid-air refueling operations requires RTCA DO-178B level A safety certification, and the foundation operating system must be ARINC 653 compliant. Wind River Platform for Safety Critical ARINC 653 is designed to provide fully integrated device software platforms that meet these stringent safety certifications. The Platform is based on VxWorks AE653, a fully ARINC653 Supplement 1 compliant operating system, which enables application of different safety levels to share computing resources and is also specifically designed to support complex, partitioned applications such as the refueling project.

“Through its integrated platforms, Wind River continues to enable its customers to drive advances in safety critical applications,” Andreas Pabinger, vice president EMEA for Wind River. “With another one of its division selecting the Wind River Platform, EADS continues to streamline its device software development while leveraging the industry’s leading device software.”

The Royal Australian Air Force has selected the A330 MRTT to meet their refuelling requirements, and the first of five aircrafts is scheduled for delivery in2008. The A310-300, which is owned by EADS/MTAD, will be the first aircraft that will include this new system. It will also be used as the demonstration aircraft for the boom system qualification in 2005.

Wind River Declares Commitment to POSIX and PSE54 Conformance

  • Wind River to expand POSIX support for defense and commercial aerospace programs
  • Using Wind River POSIX-based Platforms, companies can leverage existing software investments to build device software faster and at a lower cost

ALAMEDA, Calif.- July 7, 2004 - Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: WIND), the global leader in device software optimization (DSO), today announced that it will expand its support for Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX), a set of standard operating system interfaces that is recognized worldwide. Continuing its commitment to open standards, including the POSIX standard, Wind River enables its customers in aerospace and defense to standardize on Wind River Platforms to develop and run their device software better, faster, at a lower cost and more reliably.

"Aerospace and defense manufacturers and government agencies are facing mandates to lower costs. By leveraging existing software investments and driving standards, organizations can reduce costs and speed time to market. POSIX has remained a key open standard in this regard," said Jerry Krasner, Ph.D., chief analyst, Embedded Market Forecasters. "With its Safe and Secure Program, Wind River has established a leadership position in A&D and today's announcement illustrates their ongoing support of this market."

Wind River’s VxWorks General Purpose Platform is currently POSIX-compliant. Organizations including Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and the Department of Defense turn to Wind River for its proven and reliable technology. This year, Wind River will release VxWorks 6.0, which includes process model memory protection and significantly enhanced levels of POSIX compliance. The company is committed to achieving full conformance with the IEEE 1003.13 POSIX real-time application environment profile, PSE54.

“Wind River helps our customers minimize inefficiencies while accelerating the standardization of the device software development process. The openness and interoperability that are realized through standards, such as POSIX, play a key role in achieving this goal ,” said Dave Fraser, chief marketing officer at Wind River. “ As POSIX gains momentum within the aerospace and defense market, Wind River will work to ensure that the company’s products meet the ongoing needs of its customers.”

The IEEE 1003.1-2003 POSIX standard, developed and maintained by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), defines standard application programming interfaces to support code portability. The IEEE 1003.13 real-time profiles allow real-time operating systems to have standard POSIX interfaces without requiring a traditional full UNIX kernel. With POSIX, organizations in sectors, such as the government, can reduce costs and increase efficiencies by leveraging device software across multiple projects.

With more than twenty years in the aerospace and defense market, Wind River continues to work with leading defense contractors and government agencies to help them with next-generation programs and projects. Additionally, in July 2003, Wind River announced that it is collaborating with The Open Group to work with industry-leading device software vendors, along with corporate and government organizations, to help ensure the development of secure and reliable test and certification systems and promote standardization in the device software market.
