Wind River Announces Symmetric Multiprocessing Support for Its Industry-Leading VxWorks Real-Time Operating System

ALAMEDA, CA — October 30, 2007 — Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: WIND), the global leader in Device Software Optimization (DSO), today announced VxWorks® 6.6 with Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) support will be available on all Wind River VxWorks-based platforms in late 2007. Already the most widely used and thoroughly tested commercial real-time operating system (OS) in the market today, VxWorks 6.6 SMP support for multicore processors will further empower developers to exploit the strengths of multicore processors in their products while reducing risk, development effort and cost. Additionally, Wind River will include SMP support capability in its Workbench development suite and Workbench for On-Chip Debugging solutions, enabling faster deployment of complex multiprocessor solutions, and strengthening the company's position as a leading DSO company for multicore development.

With the introduction of SMP support in VxWorks, only Wind River can deliver a solution that addresses the full spectrum of technical and business issues faced by developers moving to a multicore solution. Wind River has made significant investments in both VxWorks and the Workbench development toolset. This enables developers to realize the promised benefits of multicore processing for their products while maintaining deterministic, real-time performance across a wide array of multicore hardware platforms. At the same time, customers can augment their product portfolio to take maximum advantage of their existing intellectual property and to allow their development teams to transition to the needs of SMP development. While multicore technology is relatively new to the embedded industry, multiprocessing is not. Wind River has taken its years of experience with multiprocessing to create products that provide the most direct path to get multicore solutions to market.

"Developing applications for multicore architectures adds significant challenge and complexity to development and design teams," said Kuljeet Kalkat, Vice President of Product Management, Wind River. "The key question developers ask us is how to migrate, debug and optimize their system for multicore. By enhancing our VxWorks platforms to provide symmetric multiprocessing support capabilities, Wind River directly addresses these concerns and provides the easiest path to the benefits of multicore — from the OS to the development tools."

By providing a stable software foundation and a complete set of development tool capabilities, Wind River platforms significantly reduce the scope and complexity of multicore device software development, while taking advantage of the performance benefits of multicore processors. Customers using the VxWorks platform to build multicore processor-based devices are expected to benefit from:

  • The ability to leverage existing investment in VxWorks software and tools, saving critical development time.

  • Faster time-to-market by using commercially available and supported run-time platforms, and developer tools with support for multiprocessing.

  • Wind River's expertise and broad technology support for multiprocessing, providing an unbiased, flexible design to meet a broad range of performance, footprint and real-time requirements.

  • Advanced multicore debug and performance tuning with Workbench development suite and Workbench, On-Chip Debugging Edition. This enables customers to quickly identify problems and visualize behavior using a patent-pending multicore debugging technology.

  • Wind River device software development expertise, available via Professional Services, Technical Account Managers and Technical Support.

Partner Support for Wind River Multicore Technologies
Wind River has alliances with leading providers of multicore processors and commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware. These alliances focus on providing excellent standard support and integration of the VxWorks platform and underlying hardware. Industry leaders, such as processor providers ARM, Broadcom, Cavium Networks, Freescale Semiconductor, Intel, MIPS Technologies and Raza Microelectronics, and COTS board providers such as Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing and GE Fanuc, support Wind River for software solutions that realize the performance benefits of their multicore hardware components.

"With over 25 years of experience in the DSO market, Wind River is uniquely positioned to unlock the value in multicore processing from a software platform perspective," said Vincent Rerolle, Vice President of Corporate Development and Strategy at Wind River. "Also, by adding Wind River VxWorks 6.6 SMP support for multicore processors to the already available SMP multicore support in Wind River Linux Platforms, Wind River offers an unmatched choice of device OS environments for multicore. As such, hardware partners recognized the importance of working with a software vendor that is equally committed to enabling multicore devices to get to market faster, with better quality and enhanced functionality."

Evaluations by Leading Customers
Key customers representing a variety of industries have been selected to evaluate advance versions of the VxWorks 6.6 SMP software, including Huawei, Kuka Roboter and ZTE. Each of these customers is evaluating the precise benefits they can derive by including VxWorks SMP support into their product lines.

Availability
VxWorks 6.6 SMP is offered as an optional add-on product for all the VxWorks 6.6-based platforms. VxWorks Platforms 6.6 and the VxWorks 6.6 SMP add-on product will be available in late 2007.
