Wind River and Freescale Introduce Multiprocessing Solution for the Freescale MPC8572 Processor
Multicore solutions from Freescale and Wind River are designed to help remove the complexity associated with developing a software solution on a multicore silicon system while taking full advantage of the performance benefits of multicore hardware components, ultimately enabling customers to improve performance, lower costs and significantly reduce time-to-market. Today's demonstration reinforces each company's commitment to developing technologies that will drive standardization and widespread adoption of multicore architecture and solutions in the device market.
"Our joint demonstration exemplifies how customers with existing legacy software for Power Architecture can benefit from an easy transition to a higher performance Power Architecture multicore solution," said Tomas Evensen, chief technology officer at Wind River. "By working closely with industry innovators such as Freescale, Wind River has become a leading multicore software provider for Power Architecture processors -- from the operating system to development tools to world-class services and support. Now more than ever, our joint customers can be sure that our technologies are well-integrated to ensure the maximum device functionality needed for today's highly competitive environment."
"Wind River's optimized solution for the MPC8572 speeds development because it maximizes reuse of existing code," said Chekib Akrout, general manager and vice president of Freescale's Networking System Division. "This joint solution demonstrates why Power Architecture technology, with its robust ecosystem of world class enablement support, is an ideal platform for unlocking the real potential of embedded multi-core processing."
The MPC8572 family of processors is designed to offer clock speeds from 1.2 GHz up to 1.5 GHz, combining two powerful e500 processor cores, enhanced peripherals and high-speed interconnect technology to balance processor performance with I/O system throughput. Based on Freescale's 90-nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) copper interconnect process technology, the MPC8572 is designed to deliver higher performance with lower power dissipation. The MPC8572 processor provides a significant performance increase and represents the next step in continuous innovation from the popular PowerQUICC™ family of embedded processors. With uncompromising integration, the MPC8572 platform builds on the performance of Power Architecture technology and adds advanced features to enhance deep packet inspection, classification and security acceleration.
To meet the needs of developers implementing Freescale's MPC8572-based designs, Wind River provides a complete solution of products that support multiprocessing and multicore technologies, including Wind River Workbench development suite and an early access release of Workbench On-Chip Debugging Edition. Software optimization for multicore devices requires a different design paradigm with regard to application interaction, performance, and concurrency. Wind River's technology leadership in debugging multicore processors with its Workbench On-Chip Debugging solution enables customers to quickly identify problems between the hardware and software using a patent-pending multicore debugging technology. As device manufacturers implement their initial multicore designs, development and on-chip debug tools from Wind River will reduce time spent in prototyping and debugging, enabling faster time-to-market.
