Wind River to Acquire DSP Technology from Eonic Systems

ALAMEDA, Calif., April 4, 2001 — Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), a leading provider of software and services for connected smart devices, today announced a definitive agreement to purchase the embedded real-time operating system (RTOS) and development tools for digital signal processors (DSPs) from Eonic Systems, nv, a developer of high-performance software solutions for real-time embedded DSP applications. This software acquisition will extend customers´ ability to leverage the Wind River software, services, and partner capabilities into systems comprising central processing units (CPUs) and DSPs. As part of this agreement, key Eonic employees associated with the product family currently known as Virtuoso™ will join Wind River. Financial details will not be disclosed. Wind River anticipates closing the transaction by late April 2001.

The key technology components of Virtuoso include a small footprint kernel optimized for DSP, an advanced virtual single processor (VSP) architecture for multicore distributed applications, and tools to enable customers to rapidly design, debug, and deploy a variety of applications with processing-intensive requirements. In addition, the VSP technology provides a heterogeneous communication and synchronization run-time solution enabling the creation of muticore embedded systems containing different combinations of reduced instruction set computers and complex instruction set computers (RISCs/CISCs), DSPs, and field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). Through this acquisition of technology and expertise, Wind River is uniquely positioned to provide every type of embedded software developer — regardless of the type of programmable silicon building block used — the tools they need in this challenging and ever-expanding market.

Today's announcement places Wind River at the forefront of one of the fastest growing segments of embedded technology. Acquiring Eonic's DSP operating system in addition to its development team is part of Wind River's overall strategy to provide complete development environments for the entire continuum of next-generation embedded solutions.

"With muticore solutions growing as steadily as general embedded technology, many of our customers have asked for Wind River tools to integrate DSP solutions with other Wind River technologies," said Tom St. Dennis, president and CEO of Wind River. "With the acquisition of Virtuoso, Wind River gives original equipment manufacturers a proven DSP RTOS and the sophisticated tools they need to develop embedded DSP solutions that integrate directly with other Wind River technologies for smart devices."

"We are pleased that Wind River has recognized the benefits of the technology currently known as Virtuoso and that customers throughout the world will now be able to leverage that technology as part of the Wind River value proposition," said Jos Wynen, president and COO of Eonic Systems, nv. "Existing customers of Virtuoso will benefit from the technology becoming available through the worldwide Wind River sales and support channel."
