Wind River Unveils VxOPC Solution

ALAMEDA, Calif., June 4, 2001 - Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), a leading provider of software and services for connected smart devices, today announced the general availability of VxOPC, a product aimed at the industrial measurement and control (IMC) market. Fully integrated with Wind River's leading VxWorks® real-time operating system (RTOS), the VxOPC solution implements the OLE for Process Control® (OPC) data access server, a set of standard interfaces that makes interoperability possible between automation/control applications, field devices and business/office applications. Wind River's VxOPC product provides developers with the pre-integrated run-time components and tools to quickly deliver high-performance and advanced connectivity for the IMC market.

For industrial software manufacturers, OPC has become the de facto standard. Thomas Burke, president of the OPC Foundation (www.opcfoundation.org) commented, "Users of embedded computing products are increasingly demanding easy, seamless interconnection with other devices. The OPC foundation is pleased to have industry leaders like Wind River as members of our organization. Wind River's VxWorks RTOS implementation offers a powerful solution with all the necessary run-time components and integrated tools to facilitate and accelerate the development of OPC-based applications."

The VxOPC solution includes a data access server run-time component and associated interactive client tools, all tightly integrated with Wind River's Tornado® integrated development environment (IDE). With the VxOPC product, customers can quickly and efficiently develop industrial applications for process control, robotics, machine builders, semiconductor manufacturing, distributed control systems, discrete controllers, and other industrial devices.

"By introducing VxOPC, Wind River customers now do not have to obtain an OPC server from another automation supplier and go through the integration hassles," said ARC Advisory Group Senior Analyst Dick Slansky. "VxOPC, when combined with the current product offerings from Wind River, provides for a complete industrial automation control development suite for the embedded environment. Wind River is clearly focusing on the industrial measurement and control sector with VxOPC, and with this addition, nicely rounds out their capability to offer automation solutions for both process and discrete control applications."

"Wind River is a leading provider of enabling technology for the industrial market with our VxWorks RTOS, Tornado IDE, VxDCOM™ technology and other important embedded development tools," said Scot Morrison, vice president and general manager of Wind River's Automotive and Industrial business unit. "By adding VxOPC to our extensive product portfolio, industrial customers have an ideal set of tools to quickly create reliable and innovative industrial devices."
