Wind River and Clarion Collaborate On Next Generation Android-based In-Vehicle Infotainment Systems

ALAMEDA, Calif. – Nov. 29, 2011 – Wind River, a world leader in embedded and mobile software, announced that Clarion, a leading manufacturer of high-performance in-car entertainment systems, is collaborating with Wind River to develop Android-based in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems.

Wind River is creating a customized Android software platform for an automotive environment and providing software integration services to ensure Clarion delivers a compatible, reliable and high quality device. Leveraging Android’s flexibility for innovation, Clarion Malaysia’s new IVI device is designed to deliver a compelling user experience, especially in areas of multimedia, entertainment and connectivity. The Clarion Malaysia IVI device is based on the Freescale i.MX applications processor family. Clarion designs and manufactures leading automotive audio and video products and related accessories for the aftermarket and original equipment manufacturers.

Wind River Powers Robot Control Unit for Italy-Based Comau

Comau Robotics has been designing automated integrated solutions for the past thirty years, offering a complete range of innovative robots to deliver high performance solutions. The C5G, the company’s fifth-generation control unit, is 50 times faster than the previous version. Using VxWorks, it runs peripherals control software, application software and real-time functions on an advanced multi-core architecture. The C5G modular hardware architecture has been designed to simultaneously manage several robots, running a variety of advanced motion algorithms. The system’s high processing power, low power consumption, and power failure recovery functionality are made possible by VxWorks, and demonstrate Comau Robotics’ practice of building highly innovative and reliable automated solutions for the market.

Wind River and ISaGRAF Join Forces for Validated and Tested Modular Safety Controls Solution

SPS/IPC/DRIVES, Nuremberg, Germany — Nov. 22, 2011 — Wind River, a world leader in embedded and mobile software, and ISaGRAF, the leading automation software technology partner, today announced that ISaGRAF has joined the Wind River Partner Validation Program. The two companies will collaborate on a validated and tested modular safety controls solution designed for companies in the energy, transportation and process markets.

Through this strategic relationship, Wind River becomes the first certified operating system provider to partner with ISaGRAF for a validated Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 3 solution. SIL is a measurement for specifying the safety integrity requirements of the safety functions to be allocated to electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety-related systems (SIL 4 has the highest level of safety integrity; SIL 1 the lowest).

Under the terms of the agreement, ISaGRAF will integrate and validate its FlexiSafe solution to Wind River’s VxWorks Cert Platform, a commercial off-the-shelf real-time operating system for delivering safety critical applications that must be certified to the stringent requirements of IEC 61508 and other related software standards. FlexiSafe is the only available IEC 61131-3 solution on the market offering the full language set for IEC 61508 SIL 3 systems.

Specifically, the combined VxWorks Cert Platform and ISaGRAF solution will have IEC 61508 SIL 3 certification, offering industrial companies a validated and tested solution for control systems with up to SIL 3 software certification requirements. By validating and certifying both solutions, customers will have a faster time to market, as well as lower development and maintenance costs.

Through this strategic relationship, Wind River will provide Achilles Level 1 cyber- security vulnerability testing for its customers in the process automation, power and energy, oil and gas, and transportation market segments so they may deploy products with certified defense against cyber-attacks.

The two companies first collaborated in 2010 when Wind River’s VxWorks became the first real-time operating system to be certified under Wurldtech's Achilles Communications Certification program. Since then, many of the world’s regulatory organizations and largest industrial companies have made Achilles Communications Certification a selection requirement. As an Achilles Communications Certification partner, Wind River will test and certify the complete customer-deployed system as customers build mission-critical systems on top of its Achilles-certified VxWorks platform.

Initially targeting the residential gateway market, Wind River Platform for Gateways is the first in a series of smart gateway solutions from Wind River that begin to address machine-to-machine (M2M) technology needs. Sumitomo Electric Networks Inc., a leading provider of broadband access equipment for major carrier customers in Japan, is currently using Wind River Platform for Gateways to develop its newest line of service gateways.

Wind River Platform for Gateways provides equipment makers with a platform they can use immediately to develop gateways that easily manage connected devices and services at the network edge. As a broadband access device, gateways are the hardware and software building blocks that connect consumers and their digital home devices with Internet-based services. Smart gateways enable operators and service providers to configure, manage, diagnose, support and deliver services more efficiently and intelligently. Beyond streaming music and entertainment, smart gateways enable services that let consumers monitor and manage sophisticated home automation and multimedia systems, such as centralized HVAC, lighting or security systems, with even greater ease and gain deeper insights into their home systems or data usage habits. Rockwell Collins selected VxWorks MILS Platform because the MILS architecture allows for the development of high robustness (EAL6+) MLS systems for use in environments requiring security and safety.

With VxWorks MILS Platform as a technology foundation, SecureOne cross domain technologies ensure that aircraft can securely process, communicate, display and store data at different classification levels, without the need to install physically separate equipment to securely protect classified data.
