Wind River and Datalight Collaborate to Provide Integrated Flash Memory Solution

ALAMEDA, Calif. – Nov. 24, 2009 – Wind River today announced that it has entered into a reseller agreement with Datalight to sell Datalight FlashFX Pro directly to customers, providing fully integrated support for NAND flash within the VxWorks operating system. NAND flash memory is quickly becoming the standard storage technology for systems requiring high-capacity data storage, including embedded devices like set-top boxes, cameras, automotive infotainment and a range of medical and industrial applications. FlashFX Pro makes it simple for software applications to access flash memory and increases overall device responsiveness.

The collaboration between Wind River and Datalight makes development and licensing of flash memory solutions for VxWorks simpler and more cost effective for customers. Wind River will now be a one-stop shop where customers can turn to fill flash memory requirements and receive post sales support, minimizing lag times and removing interoperability concerns.

"At Wind River we strive to incorporate best-in-class third-party technology into our platforms, and deliver it in an easy-to-access manner to our customers," said Marc Brown, vice president of marketing and strategy, VxWorks Product Division, Wind River. "Our customers have relied on FlashFX Pro for years to accelerate NAND integration and speed time-to-market, and now they have one place to turn to meet their embedded flash memory and real-time operating system needs."

"Both Wind River and Datalight are committed to making embedded devices in every industry more reliable, flexible and with exceptional performance," said Roy Sherrill, CEO, Datalight. "With Wind River's knowledge and experience in the embedded market and our expertise in device data storage, customers can turn to a tightly integrated, cost-effective solution and more confidently plan for, build and deliver devices to market."

"NAND is quickly becoming the dominant storage technology for embedded devices of all types," said Kevin Kilbuck, director of strategic marketing at Micron. "We expect that many of these applications will experience triple digit growth rates in NAND gigabyte consumption over the next several years."

FlashFX Pro is a flash media manager designed to deal with the complexities of both NAND and NOR flash, making it appear to the system as a standard block (hard-drive) interface. FlashFX Pro features pre-written support for over 300 flash parts, works with virtually any NAND controller, and features wear leveling, bad block management, and background compaction for unrivaled performance. Pairing FlashFX Pro with VxWorks gives customers the flexibility to use a single flash manager for all NAND, NOR, and hybrid flash technologies. FlashFX Pro works with all file systems including DosFS FAT file system and HRFS high-reliability file system from Wind River and Reliance fault-tolerant file system and Reliance Nitro high-performance fault-tolerant file system from Datalight.

Wind River and Kontron Sign Global, Multi-Year Distribution Agreement for VxWorks and Wind River Linux

ALAMEDA, Calif. and ECHING, Germany — Nov. 24, 2009 — Wind River and Kontron today announced a global, multi-year agreement under which Kontron will distribute Wind River's industry leading VxWorks and Wind River Linux operating systems. This agreement extends a decade-long collaboration, and is expected to extend the software and service offerings of Wind River and Kontron. The two companies will initially target the industrial, medical, military and aerospace, transportation, and networking market segments.

Kontron also joins the Wind River Partner Validation Program, initially with its nanoETXexpress-SP module validated for use with VxWorks 6.7. By working together to validate Wind River's embedded operating systems with leading partner software and hardware, Wind River and its partners are together providing a pre-validated solution stack to directly address integration costs, time-to-market, and long-term support. "Our customers will benefit from the closer alignment with Wind River across all market segments and regions," said Dirk Finstel, chief technology officer, Kontron AG. "This distribution agreement enables us to further reduce time-to-market requirements, and increase our value-added services by providing our customers a richer out-of-the-box experience with a compelling set of tools and operating system options. In parallel, Kontron will continue to leverage its strategic relationship with Wind River to deliver tightly integrated solutions that help reduce our customers' total cost of ownership. The inclusion of the Kontron nanoETXexpress-SP in the Wind River Partner Validation Program, including optimized VxWorks 6.7 platform evaluation in the box, is a good example."

"The distribution agreement between Wind River and Kontron will allow both companies to more quickly respond to new design win opportunities," noted Roger Williams, vice president, Strategic Alliances, Wind River. "I am also pleased that Kontron's nanoETXexpress-SP is the first embedded module to be listed with our Partner Validation Program. With both distribution and market-leading solutions in place, both companies are well positioned to capture next-generation design wins in a number of key vertical market segments."

Under terms of the distribution agreement, Kontron will be able to resell VxWorks production licenses, and also agrees to work with Wind River to proliferate Wind River Linux for use by joint customers. Wind River will continue to provide hardware and software tools, development environments, source code and support contracts for joint customers.

Barco Selects Wind River for Military Display and Management System Used by French Armed Forces

ALAMEDA, CA — November 4, 2009 — Wind River today announced that Belgium-based Barco, an international leader in high-performance display systems for aerospace applications, has selected VxWorks 653 as the foundation for its CDMS-3000 next-generation Control Display and Management System. By standardizing the CDMS-3000 on Wind River VxWorks 653 with commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) DO-178B certification evidence, Barco reduced time and cost in attaining EASA ETSO-C113 safety certification.

Barco's CDMS-3000 product family is based on its flexible MOSArt modular open system architecture. It includes the civil CDMS-3739 (ARINC 739), the military-oriented CDMS-3703 (combined ARINC-429 and MIL-STD-1553) and the versatile CDMS-3702, all hosting Barco's unique MOSArt platform. This MOSArt platform enables customers to develop and integrate their own applications on the CDMS-3000 platform.

"The CDMS-3000 product family is a next-generation offering that provides openness and flexibility to customers, while also offering COTS certification to systems integrators," said Jean-Christophe Monfret, product management director at Barco. "As a foundation for the future, we required an industry-leading, COTS DO-178B-certified real-time operating system (RTOS). Barco chose Wind River VxWorks 653 to power the CDMS-3000, which has already been selected for a variety of civil as well as military transport and surveillance aircraft."

"Wind River VxWorks 653 is the world's leading ARINC 653-compliant integrated modular avionics (IMA) platform," said Andreas Pabinger, vice president of EMEA, Wind River. "The deployment of Barco’s CDMS-3000 is just the latest example of an industry leader in civilian and military aircraft selecting the most robust ARINC 653 RTOS in the market to power its cutting-edge design. Safety certification can be a long, costly process and global avionics systems integrators now routinely rely on VxWorks 653 for its COTS certification evidence to reduce costs and time-to-flight."
