Wind River Selected for Use in Alcatel’s Next Generation IP Phones

  • Wind River General Purpose Platform, VxWorks Edition serves as the device software foundation for Alcatel’s new Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phones

Alameda, Calif.—September 27, 2004—Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: WIND), the global leader in device software optimization, today announced that Wind River’s General Purpose Platform, VxWorks Edition, was selected as the foundation for the Alcatel IP Touch 4038 and Alcatel IP Touch 4068 Internet Protocol (IP) phones. By choosing the Wind River Platform, Alcatel was able to optimize its device software development for this breakthrough application phone, which is now available worldwide.

Because of the cost-cutting efficiencies Voice over IP (VoIP) can bring to enterprises, industry leaders predict that VoIP will become the standard way companies conduct business communications. According to research firm Frost and Sullivan, converged voice/data equipment revenues are projected to reach $14B by 2006. As the leader in device software optimization (DSO), Wind River provides its customers with a proven Platform, which allows them to build VoIP-enabled devices better, faster, at a lower cost and more reliably.

The current versions of Alcatel IP Touch range of phones, which offer access to Web based technologies, run Wind River’s General Purpose Platform, VxWorks Edition. By using Wind River, Alcatel was able to focus less on low-level development processes and more on developing features and functionality that differentiate the new phone’s offerings from those of its competitors.

"We needed an efficient, reliable development solution that would allow us to add IP phones to our full range of enterprise phones,” said Jean-Luc Fourniou, chief operating officer for Alcatel's enterprise solutions activities. "By building our new IP phone on the Wind River General Purpose Platform, we were better equipped to focus on innovation and applications, enabling us to provide our customers with a next generation phone faster and at a lower cost than our competition.”

“Wind River Platforms allow our customers to leverage the growing VoIP trend and bring interoperable and reliable phones to market faster," said John Bruggeman, Chief Marketing Officer for Wind River. "By standardizing on the Wind River General Purpose Platform, VxWorks Edition, Alcatel had the foundational technology it required, allowing them to focus their efforts on delivering a next generation IP phone faster, better and at a lower cost."
