Wind River and Smiths Aerospace Partner to Extend Wind River Platform Safety Critical ARINC 653

  • Wind River Platform will meet National Security Agency's Highest Evaluation Assurance Certification Level--EAL 7
  • Boeing's C-130AMP Scheduled to use Wind River's Safe and Secure Platform technology

ALAMEDA, Calif.--March 30, 2004--As part of its Safe and Secure Program, Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: WIND), the global leader in device software optimization (DSO), today announced that it is partnering with Smiths Aerospace to extend Wind River Platform Safety Critical ARINC 653 to meet the National Security Agency's highest evaluation assurance certification level, EAL 7. Platform for Safety Critical ARINC 653 will further solidify Wind River's position as the leading provider of safe and secure systems for the military and aerospace industry.

By working with Smiths Aerospace, Wind River Platform for Safety Critical ARINC 653 with security certification will be used in Boeing's C-130 Avionics Modernization Program. Under the C-130 Avionics Modernization Program, Boeing will develop a modern, common cockpit avionics system for the approximately 500 C-130 transport aircraft in Air Force service.

"Developing a secure run-time environment that meets safety and security certifications is a significant development effort that requires expertise in project management, device software, safety and security. Smiths and Wind River have enjoyed a long history of collaborating together on projects and programs, and working toward EAL 7 security certification is the next step in this partnership," said Gerry Vossler, Director - Technology Development of Smiths Aerospace.

Wind River Platform for Safety Critical ARINC 653 will be based on a Multiple Independent Level Security (MILS) architecture, evaluated to the highest level in the Common Criteria process. A MILS environment is capable of housing and transferring data at varying security levels--secret, classified and unclassified--in a manner conformant with national security policies. A MILS environment also has secure partitioning, which gives customers the flexibility of adding applications at a later date, without having to go through the costly and time-consuming process of re-certifying the entire system. In addition to security, Wind River Platform for Safety Critical ARINC 653 is certifiable to DO-178B Level A for safety certification.

"Developing technology capable of reaching EAL 7 certification is a significant step forward in secure device software operating system technology," said Dave Fraser, chief marketing officer for Wind River. "To work with Smiths Aerospace and be used by Boeing on the C-130 AMP program is an honor, and Wind River is proud to be developing safe and secure technologies that will help strengthen our country's security infrastructure."
