Wind River Technology Selected by NETGEAR for Its New Line of Layer 3 Network Switches

Alameda, Calif.--December 22, 2003--Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), the worldwide market leader in embedded software and services, today announced that NETGEAR, a worldwide provider of technologically advanced, branded networking products, used Wind River technology to get the first of a new line of network switches, the NETGEAR GSM7324 24 Port Layer 3 Managed Gigabit Switch, to market faster than anyone else in their industry. Wind River's platform approach, which combines the leading real-time operating system, development tools and support along with unparalleled partnerships in the space, enabled NETGEAR to reduce development risk, and get to market quickly, in this case, three months from inception to product shipment.

"Our GSM7324 switch offers our customers the lowest price for a Layer 3 Gigabit switch in the industry," said Peter Newton, Product Manager at NETGEAR. "Working with Wind River and utilizing VxWorks as the foundation of our Layer 3 switch allowed us to greatly accelerate our time to market. Wind River's VxWorks real time operating system and industry leading tools were of critical importance in our rapid development cycle. The proven nature of the OS based on the millions of copies shipped significantly reduced our development risk."

Increased competition is driving network equipment manufacturers to cut costs and reduce development time, while simultaneously increasing functionality and performance levels to meet customer demand. Wind River helped NETGEAR meet those requirements with Wind River's VxWorks(R) DEVELOPER'S TOOLKIT, a platform that integrates the industry's most proven and advanced real-time operating system, VxWorks, network stack, runtime utilities, and development tools, to bring products to market on time and on budget. By using on Wind River, NETGEAR benefited from Wind River's enterprise-wide licensing terms that allow the platform to be applied across multiple projects, thereby reducing licensing costs. Plus, Wind River's existing partnerships with key hardware and software providers in the space reduced NETGEAR's time-to-market by cutting integration and testing time - typically the most time-consuming stages of a development process.

"We are very pleased that Wind River technology was selected by NETGEAR," said Joerg Bertholdt, director of marketing for digital consumer and network infrastructure at Wind River. "NETGEAR's success with this product demonstrates how the combination of Wind River's integrated products, services and unmatched partnerships can help our network equipment customers speed commercial product development and gain competitive advantage. We look forward to providing these benefits across a broad range of NETGEAR's products."

Wind River Systems to Present on Building Gateways to the Broadband Home at The Western Show 2003

What:
Sy Choudhury, Wind River's director of market development for digital consumer, will join other industry experts to discuss "Managing the Network in the Retail Environment" at The Western Show. During this discussion the panel will explore key questions facing the industry today including how to restructure network and business plans to account for and profit from the proliferation of wired and wireless devices. Is the answer home networking, installed and managed by the communication provider? Do we control the type and number of devices that can be connected to the network or just develop different ways to manage the connection into the home? Mr. Choudhury will address these questions and others, focusing largely on building secure gateways for the broadband-enabled home.

When:
Wednesday, December 3, 2003
2:30 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. (PT)

Where:
Anaheim Convention Center
Room 207 A/B
800 W. Katella Avenue, Anaheim, CA 92802

Why:
Communication providers are in the midst of major changes concerning how they offer and profit from services provided to their customers. Today's typical consumer is likely to purchase a variety of retail devices--from DVDs to PCs to digital cameras and more--which connect users to the network and consume bandwidth, but rarely provide revenue back to the communication provider. As the demand for secure connected devices mounts, companies must work together to determine the best options for building the next generation of seamless networks that meet the highest standards in innovation while creating revenue for the vendors involved.

Mr. Choudhury will be available before and after the panel for press interviews. If you are interested in scheduling a briefing, please contact windriverpr@windriver.com.
