Wind River Powers Another Technology First

ALAMEDA, Calif. Jan, 23, 2003 - Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), the worldwide market leader in embedded software and services, today announced that the world’s first Internet videophone developed by UK-based Motion Media Technology uses Wind River' real time operating system (RTOS), VxWorks®, to control the delivery of TV-quality video calls with the same ease of use as a standard telephone.

"Wind River's VxWorks RTOS has enabled our development teams to hit the ground running with high product differentiation to build the first-ever, true Internet videophone," said John Martin, Technical Director at Motion Media Technology. "Ensuring we had a reliable and robust real-time operating system inside the mm745 was a must so that the device could perform natural video calls with the lowest possible latency. We have been able to make the best use of our internal development resources by working with Wind River during the development process".

The IP-based mm745 has more processing power than a PC, and will initially support data rates of between 128kbps and 2Mbps, extending to 10Mbps in the future. Wind River’s VxWorks® RTOS controls a variety of mechanisms to manage the videophone’s bandwidth consumption in line with network availability and making deployment possible on any organisations' LAN, WAN or VPN.

The reliability of the VxWorks® RTOS enables mm745 to set-up video calls in only ten seconds, taking less time than making a 384K ISDN call where the typical call set-up time is around 30 seconds. The delays normally associated with compressing, transmitting and decompressing video and audio streams are reduced using VxWorks® real-time processing power. The mm745 has a delay lower than that of a mobile telephone so natural conversation flows.

The VxWorks® RTOS supports multiple networking protocols, applications and integration with standard web browsers. This has enabled Motion Media Technology to develop a device that allows users to simultaneously communicate face-to-face, access Web information and personalised software, and send and receive emails via internet-based accounts. It also supports an open development environment to allow Motion Media Technology to partner with application providers wanting to provide third party applications on the phone to further differentiate the product.

Steve Harris, regional director, Wind River, said "Through embracing commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) network device software components from Wind River, Motion Media Technology has succeeded in coming to market with a complex networking device that boasts higher levels of performance and product differentiation than before".

Xanavi Chooses Wind River Technology for Next-Generation Telematics System

ALAMEDA, CA and TOKYO, JAPAN — January 8, 2003 — Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), the worldwide market leader in embedded software and services, today awarded Xanavi Informatics Corporation its "Cool Customer Design" award for the Xanavi CARWINGS terminal. CARWINGS is an innovative and complete telematics system developed with Wind River's VxWorks® real-time operating system and TORNADO® integrated development environment. Nissan recently adopted the CARWINGS system for its newly remodeled 'March' automobile, drawing enthusiastic attention in Japan as one of the first inexpensive vehicles to offer car infotainment and telematics features.

According to a recent IDC survey, the telematics market is expected to continue expanding steadily and to reach total worldwide sales of 2.3 trillion yen (approximately $19 billion U.S. dollars) by the year 2010. Compared to other telematics systems adopted in high-end, expensive vehicles, CARWINGS is simpler to use and costs much less to operate. This new demographic of telematics customers signals a market shift whereby more drivers will soon be "connected" while in their cars.

"Our development team was impressed by the integration of Wind River's software, development tools, extensive networking protocols and graphics capabilities for telematics development, resulting in a quicker development cycle to get CARWINGS to market," said Naito Masafumi, Manager, OSÂ¥Middle Software Design Group Development Center, Product Research & Development Division, Xanavi Informatics Corporation. "Wind River's superb track record in various market categories, its extensive technological expertise in the integration of embedded systems, and its powerful support capabilities also prompted our decision to use Wind River technology for CARWINGS."

CARWINGS provides a comprehensive solution for users' telematic needs with innovative features, such as a steering switch that can be maneuvered while driving, a voice command system for hands-free calling, voice guides, e-mail access, and display of the vehicle's position using GPS. It also provides Drive Route AssistTM (DRATM) service as well as an automatic DJ service, and a wide range of information displayed interactively on a 4.2-inch LCD screen. The terminal takes advantage of the reliability, stability, and innovative technologies provided by Wind River's VxWorks and Tornado technologies to make state-of-the-art telematics services available to car owners.

"CARWINGS represents a significant step forward in bringing innovative car infotainment and telematics-enabled features and services to the average driver," said Scot Morrison, vice president and general manager, Wind River Automotive and Industrial business unit. "Wind River is pleased to help enable a unique telematics system with differentiating features and a low end-customer cost. We look forward to continuing our long-standing relationship with Xanavi in the future, and to further enable the growth of the telematics market."

CARWINGS is offered as a manufacturer's option and sells for around $380 (49,000 yen).
