Raytheon to Deliver Advanced Wide Area Augmentation System to the FAA for Certification using Wind River's VxWorks Operating System

ALAMEDA, Calif. and MARLBORO, Mass, - February 5, 2002 - Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND) and Raytheon Company (NYSE:RTN) today announced Raytheon is preparing to begin Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) FAA acceptance testing. WAAS was built on Wind River's Tornado for DO-178B development environment, which includes the VxWorks real-time operating system (RTOS). Following FAA acceptance, Tornado for DO-178B and the rest of the WAAS system will be certified for commercial flight navigation use. The FAA tests will ensure WAAS is compliant with its system and software requirements as well as with the DO-178B standard an internationally recognized standard created by the non-profit organization, Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics. The standard is comprised of 66 software certification safety objectives for airborne systems and equipment.

Raytheon designed WAAS in accordance with the FAA's stringent safety standards, while reducing risk and saving on development costs by using commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) certifiable software from Wind River. The DO-178B standard has five certification levels that range from most critical for assuring aircraft safety (Level A) to least critical (Level E). While WAAS most stringent safety requirements are only Level B, Wind River's Tornado development environment is designed to address DO-178B Level A requirements, as well as the requirements for lower levels.

"Wind River is proud to offer a certifiable DO-178B COTS solution so Raytheon can improve the nation's flight navigation systems with WAAS," said Steve Blackman director of marketing and business development, Wind River's Aerospace and Defense business unit. "Wind River has made a big investment in delivering a certifiable kernel for use in avionic systems. We have designed our kernel to meet the 66 objectives set forth in the DO-178B standard, and have created a development environment our customers can use as a platform to create their mission critical devices."

"Wind River's certifiable products and support made it a reliable COTS supplier for the WAAS program," said Raytheon's John Britigan, WAAS Program Manager. "We are able to deliver a quality FAA product because of the strong commitment we share with Wind River to meet this safety critical system's stringent technology requirements. We look forward to the delivery of WAAS and related avionic systems both in the U.S. and around the world."

About WAAS - a new kind of flight navigation system
WAAS is a safety-critical system that monitors and corrects Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation signals, and provides timely alerts to pilots when it is inappropriate to use any of the signals for particular flight operations. These signals are always accurate and are suitable for all phases of flight, including en route through precision approach at airports. WAAS navigation does not require assistance from any ground-based navigation aids, allowing the FAA to provide better, safer navigation service at less cost. WAAS, in conjunction with Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B), is also vital for Free Flight, an FAA initiative that will allow airlines to adopt far more flexible and economic routes in their daily operations. The system uses geostationary satellites to disseminate its correction messages, providing navigation service from ground level through all flight levels across the United States and much of North America.

Tornado for DO-178B - a platform for certifiable applications
Tornado for DO-178B is a complete COTS certification solution, ensuring shorter time-to-market by reducing the risks associated with meeting DO-178B software objectives. Tornado for DO-178B includes a wide range of development tools, the VxWorks RTOS, and the documentation required to support the certification process, as well as standard and certifiable kernel binaries, kernel test routines, test results, and source code. Potential applications for this development platform include flight controls and displays, flight management systems, automatic pilots, instrument landing, weather radar systems, as well as many space and defense systems, which also require a deterministic and highly reliable RTOS. The VxWorks RTOS has a legacy of powering safety critical applications with industry proven certification other such avionic systems running VxWorks include Mars Pathfinder, Mars Odyssey, and Raytheon's Peace Shield, EPLRS, and Sentinel programs.
