Wind River Licenses Insignia's Jeode Technology, Building a Leading Java Technology-Based Embedded Development Platform

ALAMEDA, Calif. and FREMONT, Calif., March 12, 2001 Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: WIND), a leading provider of software and services for connected smart devices, and Insignia Solutions (Nasdaq: INSG), a leading provider of accelerated Java™ software solutions for Internet appliances and embedded devices, announced today that Wind River will integrate Insignia's Jeode™ technology into the next generation of Wind River's Java technology-based platform for connected smart devices. With the addition of the Jeode Embedded Virtual Machine™ (EVM), libraries and tools, Wind River will be able to offer a comprehensive Java technology software solution with superb performance.

Both Wind River and Insignia are members of the Executive Committee for Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME™) for the Java Community ProcessSM (JCP), which is responsible for guiding the development and evolution of Java technologies for the consumer/embedded sector. This licensing agreement between the two companies exemplifies how members of the Java technology community are collaborating to proliferate the Java technology standard by providing optimized, compatible implementations.

Once integrated into Wind River's next generation Java technology-based development platform later this year, Insignia's Jeode runtime and tools components will ensure superb performance for Java technology-based embedded applications on a Sun certified environment. The Jeode EVM will deliver a balance of performance and responsiveness in a smaller memory footprint while executing Java applications on an average of six times faster than interpretive virtual machines. Combining Jeode technology with Wind River's highly optimized implementation of the standard Java Abstract Windowing Toolkit (AWT), and the reliability, scalability, portability and performance of Wind River's VxWorks® real-time operating system (RTOS), will allow Wind River to add the most complete Java technology-based embedded platform to its current suite of end-to-end solutions for embedded developers.

Research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) expects the market opportunity for these two companies to be significant. "IDC research projects revenue growth of embedded operating environment license sales to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 30% through 2004, while license unit shipments will grow even faster. Much of this growth is directly attributable to connected devices, products that frequently require an integrated Java virtual machine," said Al Gillen, research manager for system software at IDC. "Given the respective strengths of Wind River Systems and Insignia Solutions, this relationship will give Wind River customers a Java solution optimized for connected devices they are building."

Wind River and Insignia are seizing the opportunity to address this growing demand by leveraging best-of-breed Java technology-based embedded platforms in addition to Wind River's position as the market leader in the complete embedded solutions market. As members of the Executive Committee for J2ME for the JCP both Wind River and Insignia are dedicated to creating synergies for embedded Java technology-based solutions in the developer community by providing optimized, standards-compliant implementations.

"This collaboration demonstrates the success of the Java Community process as a bridge for members of the Executive Committee to work together to drive the proliferation of the Java technology standard, defined and governed through the widely adopted JCP process, by providing optimized, value-added compatible implementations for the growing, high volume embedded market," said Curtis Sasaki, director of technology advocacy for Sun Microsystems.

"Offering our customers the best Java technology-based platform is crucial for Wind River," said John Fogelin, vice president of Wind River's Platform Engineering Business Unit. "We are committed to and are investing in offering end-to-end solutions for the design and development of embedded systems which allow our customers to create innovative and reliable products with market efficiency. We understand the constraints of embedded designs, and aim to provide our customers with leading-edge technology, from an RTOS, to Java technology-based development environments, to networking connectivity. Insignia brings its high-performance Jeode technology and experience to help meet this objective."

"This partnership with Wind River is consistent with of our business strategy to make Jeode technology ubiquitous by making it available through market leaders," said Richard Noling, chief executive officer of Insignia Solutions. "With the broadest and deepest reach across vertical and horizontal markets in the embedded industry, Wind River is seen as a leader in this space and an ideal technology partner for us. We look forward to working together to enhance Wind River's Java technology solution with our Jeode technology."

About the Java Community Process Program
