Wind River Ports Two Software Platforms Onto NEC Electronics’ Advanced 3G Chip at Mobile World Congress

Partners demonstrate both Android and platformOViA™ software platforms on the Medity™ M2 running Wind River Linux

BARCELONA — Mobile World Congress — Hall 2, Booth #2H72 and Booth 8A125 — February 11, 2008 — Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:WIND), the global leader in Device Software Optimization (DSO) today announced a collaboration to demonstrate both the Open Handset Alliance's Android platform, which is currently available as an 'early look' release, and the NEC Electronics platformOViA software platform ported onto NEC Electronics' Medity M2. Both demonstrations can be seen in the NEC Electronics exhibition booth at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Wind River was chosen to port, integrate, test and optimize both software platforms to the Medity M2 because of its mobile Linux expertise and deep understanding of the chip. In addition, the demonstration marks the first time the Android platform has been ported to the chip.

"Medity M2 is the second evolution of the Medity family of chips with industry-leading features such as low-power consumption and support of MPEG-4/H.264 video and 2D and 3D graphics, and both demonstrations further highlight the power and performance the chip offers customers," said Katsuhiko Itagaki, general manager, SoC Systems Division, NEC Electronics. "We are delighted with Wind River's unparalleled expertise in mobile Linux and their enabling of advanced mobile platforms onto Medity M2."

As the mobile handset market continues to thrive and the demand for multimedia-rich features on a fast and sleek handset continue to grow, developing applications that set one phone apart from the next becomes more time consuming and significantly increases software development costs. With Wind River Linux, customers receive a pristine source layered through a transparent build system, improving developer productivity by enhancing package management. In partnership with leading silicon and board vendors, Wind River offers reference designs to make hardware choice and board bring-up faster and easier.

platformOViA is a Linux-based, vertically integrated software stack designed to accelerate 3G-handset time to market. Also targeted for the digital video and automotive infotainment markets, the platform offers a common software API and pre-integrated partner components. Created by NEC Electronics in collaboration with leading software vendors and system integrators, the platform features an open architecture and support of leading-edge technologies such as multi-processing. Further, companies using platformOViA can utilize system LSIs developed in line with characteristics of each application.

The Android platform is an open software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key core applications. Developers have full access to the same framework APIs used by the core applications. The application architecture is designed to simplify the reuse of components; any application can publish its capabilities and any other application may then make use of those capabilities (subject to security constraints enforced by the framework). This same mechanism allows components to be replaced by the user.

"Partnering with NEC Electronics has been an extremely rewarding experience and we are pleased to provide the Android platform and our Linux expertise to power both software platform demonstrations on the Medity M2," said Jason Whitmire, general manager of mobile solutions, Wind River. "This is a very exciting time for mobile Linux and we are thrilled that technology leaders like NEC Electronics and industry organizations such as the Open Handset Alliance continue to look to Wind River as their Linux commercialization partner of choice."

Medity M2 combines a dual mode (W-CDMA/HSDPA, GSM/GPRS) DBB and application processor in one LSI. Medity M2 utilizes the more advanced ARM1176JZF-STM core, delivering a significant improvement in performance. In addition to featuring newly developed low-power-consumption technology, the Medity M2 enables the creation of more compact and price-competitive handsets through the reduction of the number of components, something that is achieved through total sharing of external memory among the DBB and application processing functions and other means. Medity M2 represents a comprehensive solution that can help manufacturers develop a handset that meets the needs of their end-customers.
