Partners demonstrate both Android and platformOViA™ software platforms on the Medity™ M2 running Wind River Linux

BARCELONA — Mobile World Congress — Hall 2, Booth #2H72 and Booth 8A125 — February 11, 2008 — Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:WIND), the global leader in Device Software Optimization (DSO) today announced a collaboration to demonstrate both the Open Handset Alliance's Android platform, which is currently available as an 'early look' release, and the NEC Electronics platformOViA software platform ported onto NEC Electronics' Medity M2. Both demonstrations can be seen in the NEC Electronics exhibition booth at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Wind River was chosen to port, integrate, test and optimize both software platforms to the Medity M2 because of its mobile Linux expertise and deep understanding of the chip. In addition, the demonstration marks the first time the Android platform has been ported to the chip.

In partnership with leading silicon and board vendors, Wind River offers reference designs to make hardware choice and board bring-up faster and easier.

platformOViA is a Linux-based, vertically integrated software stack designed to accelerate 3G-handset time to market. Also targeted for the digital video and automotive infotainment markets, the platform offers a common software API and pre-integrated partner components. Created by NEC Electronics in collaboration with leading software vendors and system integrators, the platform features an open architecture and support of leading-edge technologies such as multi-processing. Further, companies using platformOViA can utilize system LSIs developed in line with characteristics of each application.

The Android platform is an open software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key core applications. Developers have full access to the same framework APIs used by the core applications. The application architecture is designed to simplify the reuse of components; any application can publish its capabilities and any other application may then make use of those capabilities (subject to security constraints enforced by the framework). This same mechanism allows components to be replaced by the user.

Medity M2 combines a dual mode (W-CDMA/HSDPA, GSM/GPRS) DBB and application processor in one LSI. Medity M2 utilizes the more advanced ARM1176JZF-STM core, delivering a significant improvement in performance. In addition to featuring newly developed low-power-consumption technology, the Medity M2 enables the creation of more compact and price-competitive handsets through the reduction of the number of components, something that is achieved through total sharing of external memory among the DBB and application processing functions and other means. Medity M2 represents a comprehensive solution that can help manufacturers develop a handset that meets the needs of their end-customers.
