Toradex and Wind River Partner for Aerospace and Defense Innovation

Toradex and Wind River are partnering with the goal of advancing the pace of aerospace and defense (A&D) innovation by uniting certifiable reliability with rapid development.

Toradex specializes in the design and manufacture of high-quality, reliable, and scalable embedded computing solutions, particularly systems-on-modules (SoMs) and single-board computers (SBCs). The company provides easy-to-use commercial off-the-shelf products and services for industrial and commercial applications.

A&D programs operate in a landscape defined by rigorous certification, uncompromising size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP‑C) requirements, and intense time-to-deployment pressures. Historically, addressing these challenges forced development teams to choose between prototyping velocity and final certification — a trade-off that ultimately slows delivery of mission-critical systems.

Through this collaboration, engineering teams can combine the certification-ready VxWorks® real-time operating system with the powerful SoMs from Toradex, including its new i.MX 95–powered SoMs. That will enable team members to use the same hardware platform to transition seamlessly from Linux-based rapid prototyping on Torizon to VxWorks, or to host both Torizon and VxWorks in secure, partitioned virtual machines under Wind River® Helix™ Virtualization Platform on the same module. This unified path optimizes resources, accelerates development, and strengthens certification assurance.

Among the benefits of the partnership:

  • Immediate prototyping: Teams can jump-start development using Toradex’s i.MX 95–based SoMs and starter kits. Doing so can reduce barriers to creating functional hardware and bring benefits from early feedback.
  • Frictionless migration: Applications validated on production-intent hardware under Linux can move directly to VxWorks. That eliminates costly hardware changes and preserves development velocity.
  • Mixed‑criticality consolidation: Engineers can host Torizon and VxWorks in isolated virtual machines via Helix Platform. That lets them reduce cost and integration complexity while maintaining strict safety and performance partitions.
  • Certification alignment: VxWorks brings mature, deterministic real-time performance and a robust open certification pathway. It supports alignment with the FACE™ Technical Standard and the DO‑178C standard.
  • Long-term reliability: Combined support from Wind River and Toradex ensures sustained, predictable system operation across extensive aerospace program lifecycles.

This alliance empowers our A&D customers to deploy mission-critical edge solutions such as flight displays, unmanned systems, command and control, and secure communications, and to do so faster and with greater confidence. Teams prototype sophisticated logic in modern Linux, then transition to a robust VxWorks RTOS for deployment, without compromising development speed.

Moreover, this partnership extends beyond aerospace and defense. Our two companies are working together in other markets, including the automotive, energy, industrial, and medical industries. Development teams in all these sectors can use the same certifiable reliability and rapid development pathways for their mission‑critical edge solutions.

Toradex and Wind River share a commitment to engineering excellence and customer success. Together, we are delivering an integrated hardware-software roadmap matched to the needs of tomorrow’s aerospace and defense platforms.
