Wind River Strengthens Ties with Global Research and Education Communities
The California Institutes for Science and Innovation represent a billion-dollar, multidisciplinary effort that focuses public and private resources and expertise on research areas critical to sustaining California's economic growth and its competitiveness in the global marketplace. The new ideas and technologies developed by researchers at the California Institutes for Science and Innovation help expand the economy into new industries and markets - and bring the benefits of innovation into the lives of people everywhere. These institutes will open the doors to new understanding, new applications and new products through essential research in biomedicine, bioengineering, nanosystems, telecommunications and information technology.

Wind River University Program
The Wind River University Partner Program grants technology donations to universities throughout the world to train students and faculty on Wind River technology. In addition, Wind River actively supports both innovative and traditional academic research efforts to broaden the awareness of embedded systems. Products available for the program include Wind River’s recently announced WIND RIVER PLATFORMS, industry-leading real time operating system, VxWorks and its integrated development environment, Tornado.
With 170 active universities worldwide currently participating in the program, it is the largest embedded educational initiative in the world. The program counts respected universities from Asia, Australia, Europe, and the Americas among its members. Notables from the United States include University of California at Berkeley, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Stanford University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.
"At the University of California, Berkeley, new courses that leverage Wind River technology have been introduced at the undergraduate and graduate levels," said Alberto Sangiovanni-Vincentelli, Vice-Chair for Industrial Relations, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California at Berkeley. "Embedded systems play a major role in our research, and with Wind River's donation, we can continue to move forward with major research initiatives and with the greater advancement of embedded technologies."
Sample current research projects and classes include:
- University of California, Berkeley: Development of networking software for ad-hoc wireless networks, sponsored by the Office of Naval Research; design of a next-generation campus wireless LAN system; Giotto: A methodology for embedded control systems development
- Stanford University, Aerospace Robotics Lab: Free flying space robots, underwater robotics for science missions, Robotics Research Corp. K-1607 Manipulator Arm, autonomous helicopter
- Carnegie Mellon University, Robotics Institute: Developing real-time geometric re-planning and terrain registration technologies for integration into future Army unmanned ground combat systems; courses in network design and evaluation, real-time computer control systems design, mechatronic design, mobile robot design
Georgia Institute of Technology: Aerospace engineering unmanned aerial vehicle laboratory; mechanical engineering intelligent machine dynamics lab
Ohio State University, Center for Automotive Research: Supervisory control system for optimizing power train characteristics using advanced energy management and emission control algorithms
- Oregon State University: Hardware acceleration of cryptographic applications
