Wind River Keeps the Army on Target

London, September 13, 2005 — Wind River Systems, Inc., the global leader in Device Software Optimisation (DSO), is supporting a state-of-the-art fire planning and control application for the British Army.

Wind River’s VxWorks® operating system will play a key role in the Fire Control Battlefield Information System Application (FC BISA), an advanced, safety-related (standard IEC-61508 SIL 2), distributed command and control system for indirect fire support.

LogicaCMG, which developed the system on behalf of the Ministry of Defence, selected Wind River® technology to power the FC BISA Interface Unit (IU) thanks to its high levels of reliability.

The IU application will allow the FC BISA to integrate various artillery equipments into the Fire Control command processes including the Multiple Launch Rockets System (MLRS) and Counter Battery Radar (COBRA).

"We chose Wind River because of its reputation and proven resilience in some of the most challenging environments," said Andy Walter, principal consultant at LogicaCMG. "Given the mission-critical nature of the data being processed, there can be no room for breakdowns."

The FC BISA forms part of the MOD’s plan to digitise its tactical communications infrastructure under project Bowman. FC BISA will provide the Royal Artillery and the Infantry with a world-beating indirect fire control command and control capability to enable the most effective management of current and emerging Indirect Fire Support weapons and ammunition natures.

"The fact that the MOD is using Wind River technology to power such a mission critical device, pays testament to the reliability of our systems," said Steve Harris, Senior Regional Director - Northwest Europe at Wind River.
