Wind River and The Weather Channel Team to Create New, Broadcast TV Localization Delivery System

  • Highly optimized device software enables customized, localized programming feeds and targeted content through IntelliStar

ALAMEDA, Calif.--March 29, 2004--Wind River Systems, Inc (NASDAQ: WIND), the global leader in device software optimization (DSO), today announced that The Weather Channel engaged Wind River for product development and realization of their new IntelliStar system--a next-generation, geography-specific TV programming system and device. By relying on Wind River to develop the Thunderstorm PCI card, the brains of the IntelliStar, The Weather Channel leveraged Wind River's device software expertise and technology portfolio to architect, develop, deliver and field test the IntelliStar. IntelliStar will be used by TV program distributors nationally, including Cox Communications, Comcast Communications, DirecTV, Charter Cable, and National Cable Television Cooperative.

IntelliStar is the basis of the next generation WEATHER STAR®, The Weather Channel's unique broadcast localization system. The localization of broadcasts allows The Weather Channel to target relevant weather, programming and advertising content to its viewers. Some 2,000 IntelliStar-based systems will be deployed to cable headends across the country reaching an estimated 50 million viewers by the fall of 2004.

"The IntelliStar provides our customers with immediate enhancements and opens the way for future programming advances and support for new revenue services," said Brian Shield, executive vice president and Chief Information Officer at The Weather Channel. "Wind River provided us with he device software and services expertise that were required to reach a new level of programming advances that include robust content and sophisticated localization capabilities. By using Wind River's services, we were able to get IntelliStar to market on time and with a reduced bill of materials (BOM)."

The IntelliStar provides sophisticated capabilities in television broadcasting with support for localized and targeted content. Technically, the IntelliStar device can support SDI or analog video input, render real-time graphics and play stored content (e.g. data, movie files, ads, etc.) providing a richer, more contextually relevant experience for the viewer. All of the content generated or played through the IntelliStar can be output on the analog and digital-tier simultaneously allowing the IntelliStar to easily interoperate within a digital cable head-end.

"By leveraging Wind River's expertise in software optimization, The Weather Channel was able to deliver this next generation product more efficiently and set the stage for future revenue opportunities," said Brad Murdoch, vice president of Alliances for Wind River.
