Wind River Demonstrates Open Handset Alliance Android Platform On STMicroelectronics Nomadik® Application Processor

Partners collaborate to demonstrate the platform on the STMicroelectronics Nomadik family of multimedia application processors at Mobile World Congress

BARCELONA — Mobile World Congress — Hall 2, Booth #2H72 — February 11, 2008 — Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:WIND), the global leader in Device Software Optimization (DSO), announced today that it has partnered with STMicroelectronics to demonstrate the Open Handset Alliance's Android platform, which is currently available as an 'early look' release. The demonstration will show Android on the STMicroelectronics Nomadik family of multimedia application processor chips at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. STMicroelectronics selected Wind River to port, integrate, test and optimize Android onto Nomadik because of Wind River's role as a Linux Commercialization Partner for the Open Handset Alliance and its experience porting the Android platform to new architectures.

"Wind River's commercialization expertise in mobile Linux unleashes the potential of our hardware to power this next generation mobile development platform," said Monica de Virgiliis, General Manager of the Wireless Multimedia Division at STMicroelectronics. "Our innovative Nomadik architecture and multimedia chips are designed to deliver today's active information and entertainment experiences on energy-sensitive mobile platforms. The demonstration at Mobile World Congress exemplifies the value of our technology and our commitment to showcasing our wares on demanding next generation software environments."

The Nomadik application processors are designed specifically for mobile devices, using an on-chip multi-processor distributed architecture to deliver unsurpassed audio, video and imaging quality, with ultra-low power consumption for longer battery life. Simplified software development leads to shorter time-to-market for products such as smart phones, multimedia feature phones, personal digital assistants (PDA), Internet appliances and car entertainment systems, with scalability to cater for multiple market segments and future multimedia applications.

Open Handset Alliance device manufacturers and other OEMs can work with Wind River to port the Android platform onto their respective hardware platforms and optimize it based on their specific requirements to deliver the greatest levels of silicon performance, including any necessary tuning of the Linux kernel. Additionally, Wind River provides the Linux support necessary for OEMs and ISVs to complete their integrations quickly and effectively, dramatically simplifying the development and distribution of mobile applications. As a result, Linux-based phones and devices will be brought to market faster with lower bill of material costs.

"We are seeing tremendous interest in the Android platform from OEMs, silicon vendors and device manufacturers," said Jason Whitmire, general manager of mobile solutions, Wind River. "As the mobile industry continues to evolve, we anticipate a continued push for an open, standards-based Linux platform. Wind River's expertise in bringing Linux-based devices to market offers handset manufacturers an added level of confidence knowing we can help bring their device to market faster, better and at lower cost."
