Wind River Powers Proxim's ORiNOCO Wi-Fi Enterprise Access Points

  • Wind River enables development, connectivity and remote management of leading Wi-Fi access points for industry leader
  • Wind River DSO solutions enable Proxim to build devices faster, better, at a lower cost and more reliably

ALAMEDA, Calif., May 10, 2004 - Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: WIND), the global leader in device software optimization (DSO), today announced that Proxim Inc. (NASDAQ: PROX) selected Wind River technology as the foundation for its ORiNOCO AP-600ԠWi-Fi access point. The industry-leading 802.11 access point was developed using Wind River's VxWorks⠲eal-time operating system (RTOS), development tools and built-in TCP/IP networking software.

Wi-Fi technology, driven by the widely adopted 802.11 wireless Ethernet standard, has emerged worldwide as the wireless means of network connectivity in coffee shops, airports, hotels and office buildings. The Proxim ORiNOCO AP-600 Access Point is a fully Wi-Fi compliant, single-radio access point available in every radio standard: 802.11a, 802.11b and 802.11g. Wind River's DSO technology enabled Proxim to get this device to market faster, better, less expensively and more reliably.

The wireless local area network (WLAN) market has shown remarkable resiliency, with strong growth rates exceeding many analysts' expectations even in the midst of a technological economic downturn. According to Cahners In-Stat, the overall WLAN market will grow from 3.3 million total units shipped in 2000 to 23.6 million total units shipped in 2005.

"As a leading provider of wireless LAN technology for 802.11-enabled access points and residential gateways, we look to Wind River as an important software and tools partner in enabling us to bring our entire range of products to market," said Geoffrey Smith, vice president of Engineering, LAN Division at Proxim. "Wind River was able to provide us with the required components and leading-edge technology we require to get our product to market, as well as the ability to support us locally at all development sites worldwide."

"Timely and reliable support for leading edge technology, such as IPv6, SNMP, and the IEEE-802.11 standards are some of the many reasons that Wind River has established a leadership position in broadband access and connectivity devices such as DSL and cable modems, wireless access points, and residential gateways," said Sayeed Choudhury, director of market development for digital consumer at Wind River. "We are extremely pleased that a leading company such as Proxim has and continues to leverage Wind River's Platforms to develop 802.11 wireless access points to wired and wireless-enabled broadband gateways."
