Airspan Networks Selects Wind River Technology for Next Generation Broadband Wireless WiMAX Subscriber Station

  • Wind River Platform for Network Equipment used as foundation for Airspan's wireless DSL subscriber station
  • Airspan gets to market faster than the competition with Wind River

ALAMEDA, Calif., May 12, 2004 - Wind River Systems, Inc (NASDAQ: WIND), the global leader in device software optimization (DSO), today announced that Airspan Networks (NASDAQ: AIRN), a leading worldwide equipment provider of wireless DSL networks, chose Wind River Platform for Network Equipment as the foundation for its next generation Broadband Wireless WiMAX Subscriber Station. Wind River's integrated Platform for Network Equipment provides the operating system, management, protocols and tools to provide Airspan a significant time to market advantage.

Airspan Networks is one of the market's first vendors to offer 802.16a products. WiMAX (802.16d) is the latest entry in the wireless networking technology space, poised to be a low-cost, high performance alternative to DSL, cable modem or other network access technologies. Equipment can be installed on existing structures like buildings or poles, and has a range of up to 30 miles, at speeds up to 70 Mbit/second. Because Wind River is the only DSO vendor that provides all the necessary development components?real-time embedded operating system, device management, high performance router stack and middleware technologies?in one integrated and tested Platform for Network Equipment, Airspan is able to accelerate time to market and ensure reliability of its end product.

"We chose to work with Wind River for our WiMAX platforms because the integrated development solution is guaranteed to speed our time to market," said Paul N. Senior, vice president of marketing at Airspan Networks. "WiMAX based technology is set to skyrocket and provide wireless DSL access to even the most congested metropolitan areas. Wind River is playing a critical role in the process, helping us establish first to market advantage."

"Wind River continues to be the only DSO vendor that provides a robust and integrated development platform," said Yuvel Tsuk, regional director Middle East for Wind River. "Customers like Airspan turn to Wind River to help get them up and running quickly in emerging markets, where time to market and extreme reliability are paramount."
