Wind River Expands Worldwide Design Services Capabilities With New European Center

ALAMEDA, Calif., January 15, 2001 Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), a leading provider of software and services for connected smart devices in the Internet age, today announced a major expansion of its design services capability through the opening of a specialist design center in Grenoble, France. The new center extends Wind River's unrivalled embedded research and development capabilities even further by providing a comprehensive development outsourcing option for European-based customers.

"By opening the Grenoble design center, Wind River can really focus on the strong consumer and telecom markets in Europe," said Tom St. Dennis, president and CEO of Wind River. "Wind River's business is increasingly oriented towards providing advanced building blocks and highly experienced services teams that help customers realize new business opportunities based around these advanced technologies. The expansion in the breadth and scope of design challenges being brought to Wind River has necessitated both the growth of existing design center teams and establishment of new local development sites. The Grenoble center is part of that strategy."

"Finding a talented team of design professionals in the high-tech center of Grenoble has been a real highlight of this year," said Kamran Sokhanvari, vice president and general manager of Wind River's Services business unit. "The continuing strength and leadership of European manufacturers in key areas such as digital TV, broadband and wireless Internet, and the growing significance of Wind River's product offerings to those organizations, made it imperative that we have a local capability to assist with their design services needs. The opening of the Grenoble design center underscores our commitment to build Wind River services capabilities on a global scale."

The Grenoble design center will include 15-20 experienced engineers with expertise in the architectural design and hardware and software implementations of complex embedded systems. The close connections that exist between Wind River's European team and key strategic partners in the region have already resulted in significant project design contracts that will be executed in conjunction with US-based projects in the same markets.

Wind River created a services business unit in August 1999. That business unit gained strength through the merger between Integrated Systems, Inc., including its Doctor Design, Inc. group, and Wind River. The result was a more distributed consulting and design services organization, with established design centers in San Diego, Alameda, Dallas and Indianapolis. In addition to those capabilities, Wind River has a substantial and growing European operation, including a network of sales offices, support centers and product development teams spread throughout the region. Over 100 European engineers are involved in many aspects of Wind River product development, including the original architectural development of the Tornado® integrated development environment.
