Wind River's IceStorm Browser and Services Integrated with ATLINKS´ WebTouch Terminals

ALAMEDA, Calif., March 23, 2001 — Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), a leading provider of software and services for connected smart devices, today honored ATLINKS with its "Cool Customer Design" award (to view previous winners, please visit the Cool Customer Archive). The award is for ATLINKS´ pair of Internet-ready Web devices — the Alcatel WebTouch® Easy and the Alcatel WebTouch® Plus — second-generation Internet terminals that vastly facilitate everyday Web browsing. ATLINKS, owned by Alcatel and Thomson Multimedia, is a world leader in Internet terminals and residential telephones.

The WebTouch family of devices targets both professional and residential users, with Plug & Surf™ functionality and an intuitive user interface featuring direct access to Web, email, and — for the WebTouch Plus — a telephone with advanced telephony features. Each device has a 56 Kbps modem, integrated keyboard, color touchscreen, and easily connects to a printer.

The new WebTouch line integrates a component of Wind River's Tornado® for Internet Appliances (TIA) called the IceStorm™ browser, the leading embedded browser technology for Internet appliances. The WebTouch products excellently demonstrate how Wind River's end-to-end solution allows its customers to make the best use of their own development resources and create products that are highly customized to their own design specifications. In addition to using the IceStorm browser, ATLINKS accessed Wind River Services to aid in the integration and optimization of the IceStorm browser for ATLINKS´ platform, as well as in providing real-world, system-level testing for Web-page compatibility, allowing ATLINKS to get their next-generation product to market faster.

"Support of the latest Web standards is an absolute requirement in order to deliver a rich and fulfilling Web-browsing experience to our customers," said Bruno Suard, vice president Internet appliances at ATLINKS. "This is why we chose Wind River's IceStorm browser. The added bonus was that Wind River Services were on hand through every phase of development to help us fit all the pieces together. We made our market window with two very strong products, and in the end, that's what counts."

"We aim to provide building blocks that enable our customers to create connected smart devices," said J.C. Sarner, vice president and general manager of Wind River's Consumer business unit, "from the operating system to Internet applications to design services and support. ATLINKS is a great example of a customer that utilized several components from our complete solution for the embedded consumer market."

The IceStorm browser is a third-generation, lightweight, Java®-technology-based browser that is scalable to less than 500 KB in size. It supports the latest Web standards, provides full e-commerce security, and is part of Wind River's TIA portfolio of vertical solutions for Internet devices. TIA includes runtime components such as the VxWorks® embedded real-time operating system, the Personal JWorks™ Java virtual machine, and the IceStorm applications suite, which in turn includes the IceStorm browser, email client, and personal information manager. TIA also provides a suite of host development tools to facilitate the development of Internet appliances.
