Wind River Announces Tornado for Managed Switches Support for the Intel IXP 1200 Network Processor Family
(TMS) 2.0 support for the Intel® IXP1200 Network Processor, a widely used programmable processor that accelerates development of next-generation Internet products. This announcement extends Wind River's strategy to offer customers integrated development platforms that support industry leading processors.
By combining Intel's IXP1200 Network Processor with an infrastructure development platform such as TMS, network equipment vendors can quickly and easily develop leading edge Internet infrastructure equipment. TMS 2.0 enables flexible integration of customer-specific features into networked equipment. The TMS development platform is portable and upgradeable across a wide range of hardware architectures, has comprehensive packet or cell processing in real time for Layer 3 communications applications, and quickly adapts to new and evolving software standards.
The TMS platform incorporates Wind River's powerful Tornado integrated development environment (IDE), the VxWorks® real-time operating system (RTOS), and the common set of protocol and management components required for enterprise-class routing and switch-based devices. In addition, the TMS platform can easily be extended to address a variety of network devices, making it a more complete network application solution.

Wind River's TMS 2.0 platform and Intel's IXP1200 Network Processor are designed to meet the performance requirements of switches, routers, and other high-speed communication equipment used in access and edge applications in service provider's networks. The combination of these products is expected to help communication equipment manufacturers speed the development of next-generation equipment. As it offers a complete solution, the TMS 2.0 platform has been widely adopted in the emerging market for Layer 3 switches, a segment that The Dell´Oro Group research firm forecasts to grow to $8.4 billion by 2004.
