StarCore DSP Core Technology Sets Sail with Wind River Embedded Software Solutions

ALAMEDA, Calif., and ATLANTA, Georgia, July 23, 2001 - Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), a leading provider of software and services for connected smart devices, and StarCore® Technology Center today announced a definitive agreement among Wind River, Agere Systems (NYSE: AGR.A) and Motorola (NYSE: MOT) to develop an integrated hardware and software development platform for DSP-driven system-on-a-chip (SoC) embedded applications. The platform combines Wind River's embedded software and development tools with the latest StarCore digital signal processor (DSP) technology. Through the agreement, Wind River will optimize its multi-core real-time operating system (RTOS) technology and development tools for the StarCore DSP architecture to aid in the development of wireless communications devices, high-speed networking products and other market segments targeted by StarCore DSP technology. The platform will initially be ported to three currently announced products: the MSC8101 and MSC8102 from Motorola and the StarPro 2000 from Agere Systems.

The StarCore Technology Center is the cooperative research and development initiative between Agere Systems [formerly the Microelectronics Group of Lucent Technologies (NYSE:LU)] and Motorola. The StarCore Technology Center's objective is to develop best-in-class DSP cores and development tools that aid Motorola and Agere in delivering innovative DSP SoC solutions. These solutions are well aligned with the needs of both Agere Systems and Motorola, as well as their customers, in emerging communications applications in third generation (3G) wireless handsets and infrastructure, networking clients and servers, voice/data/video over Internet protocol (IP), and consumer and transportation markets. These DSP solutions can be expected to help increase efficiencies and reduce time to market for new releases of cores and tools, so that original equipment manufacturers can gain access to a common base of code-compatible DSP cores with broad application value.

"Clearly, the Wind River support adds considerable value to the StarCore core technology product portfolio," said Will Strauss, president of DSP market watcher Forward Concepts. "StarCore continues to strengthen its strong architectural foundation with this new agreement." To help Agere Systems and Motorola build these solutions, Wind River's powerful embedded development tools and operating system technology will be made available for the StarCore SC100 generation of DSP cores. Wind River will develop and provide the Diab(tm) C/C++ compiler and RTA Suite(tm) of run-time analysis tools, a StarCore-targeted source-level debugger, visionPROBE hardware debug tools to aid in the early stages of hardware bring-up, and a future version of its Tornado® integrated development environment (IDE). In addition, Wind River will provide a multi-core DSP operating system derived from technology recently acquired from Eonic Systems (see related press release, Wind River to Acquire DSP Technology from Eonic Systems, April 4, 2001).

"Wind River is pleased to develop a complete, IDE and RTOS for standalone and multi-core StarCore DSP designs," said John Fogelin, vice president and general manager, Wind River Platforms Business Unit. "The solution will offer substantial time to market improvement for Agere Systems and Motorola customers. Wind River, Agere Systems, and Motorola will also work together to ensure the community of third-party developers, who currently add value to Wind River's products, will be leveraged to accelerate market adoption of StarCore DSP technology. The end result will be a complete embedded development solution not previously seen in the DSP market."

"The StarCore Technology Center is very pleased to be working with Wind River," said Thomas Brooks, marketing director, StarCore Technology Center. "Motorola and Agere Systems customers developing DSP-based SoC products for communications applications can expect to benefit greatly from the comprehensive software development tool chain along with the expertise from the community of the 600+ third-party software developers, that Wind River is providing in support of the StarCore SC100 DSP cores. Our new relationship helps to provide the framework for current Wind River application development partners to easily port their code to Motorola's and Agere Systems' StarCore SC100-based DSP products using Wind River's application program interface."
