Wind River Continues to Deliver on the Promise of Java Technology for Consumer, Automotive and Communications Applications

Alameda, Calif., January 8, 2002 -- Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: WIND), a leading provider of software and services for connected devices, today announced the release of JWorks"!, its next generation Java platform for embedded applications. JWorks is a complete embedded Java platform including a tight integration of two market leading technologies tailored to the specific requirements of the embedded developer using Java technology Insignia Solutions (Nasdaq: INSG) high performance Jeode Java virtual machine (JVM) and Wind River s VxWorks real-time operating system (RTOS).

Java technology continues to entice embedded systems developers with the promise of connected, smart and re-programmable devices. Early Java platforms did not address the unique constraints of embedded development they were big, slow, difficult to port to new hardware and inconsistent.

Wind River addressed these original challenges in Personal JWorks"! by combining the embedded qualities of the VxWorks RTOS reliability, scalability, portability, small memory footprint and high performance with the advantages of Java technology write once, run anywhere, easy network connectivity and Internet readiness, availability of web services, content extensibility, and third party application add-ons. Today, Wind River improves on that initial move by tightly integrating the Sun-authorized high performance Jeode JVM environment from Insignia.

"Developers looking to benefit from the promise of Java technology -- especially those building consumer, automotive and communications applications -- have been hampered by the performance of existing Java platforms in the past and will truly appreciate JWorks," said John Fogelin, chief technical officer and general manager Wind River Platforms business unit. "The use of Insignia s Jeode technology versus our earlier Sun implementation has improved performance of one of our customer s Java-based application by 200-300%. By combining two of the best embedded Java-based products on the market, we have once again demonstrated the ability to understand and successfully address our customer s technical and time-to-market requirements."

Wind River s JWorks implements Sun Microsystems Java technology for 32-bit PersonalJava and J2ME Connected Device Configuration (CDC) classes of devices.

"Our Jeode virtual machine environment is a perfect technology fit for Wind River s JWorks platform. We are proud to deliver the high performance, compatibility, reliability and adaptability that Wind River was seeking for its next generation embedded Java virtual machine technology," said Richard Noling, chief executive officer of Insignia Solutions. "Wind River and Insignia were respectively outlined as second and third embedded Java solution providers after Sun in Venture Development Corporation s 2001 The Future of Embedded Java report. We believe the combination of our strengths and market positions will more than ever lead the way into the Java-based information appliance era."
