Wind River and Fonix Corporation Enable Speaking Smart Devices

ALAMEDA, Calif., August 2, 2001 - Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), a leading provider of software and services for connected smart devices, today announced an agreement with Fonix® Corporation (OTC BB: FONX) to help accelerate the development of embedded devices with voice-recognition capabilities for consumer and automotive markets. Wind River and WindLink™ partner Fonix will team up to create demonstrations that showcase natural language interface features, such as voice and handwriting recognition, in a wide range of embedded applications. The joint technology demonstrations and co-marketing efforts will help show how to take speech-based product ideas from the drawing board to market readiness.

Wind River's Services organization will support this agreement to be a premier center for the integration of Fonix technologies and products, such as Text-To-Speech (TTS), Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), and Handwriting Recognition (HWR) in embedded applications platforms, becoming a global source of consulting and project expertise in the natural language arena. Live demos of Wind River's StormPad™ Internet appliance running the Fonix voice interface for automotive infotainment systems will be on display at Wind River's trade show booths at events throughout the rest of this year.

"We´re working closely with Fonix because of their high-quality technology and cost-effective position in the marketplace," said Kamran Sokhanvari, Wind River's vice president of global operations and services. "As the demand for speech-based interfaces in the consumer and automotive markets rises, we´re taking our partnership with the leader in this space to the next level. By securing a valuable foothold in this arena, we can provide our customers with an even wider range of solutions in the future."

"Fonix is committed to delivering the highest quality and most competitively priced speech and handwriting solutions available in some of our largest target markets -- the consumer and automotive development markets," said Kurt W. Flygare, vice president of sales for Fonix Corporation. "Speech and handwriting technologies are in high demand in the marketplace and our partners and customers are ready to implement them further. Wind River has consistently provided its customers with valuable offerings and we are confident that Fonix technologies will continue to integrate well into further Wind River development products."

Fonix Corporation is a leading provider of natural-language interfaces for wireless and mobile devices, Internet and telephony systems, and vehicle telematics. Fonix ASR is a command-and-control technology that does not require the user to train his or her voice to the system and provides a high level of recognition accuracy, while Fonix TTS offers consistent API sets, markup language support, and functionality across multiple platforms. The Fonix Allegro HWR system is the most natural electronic input program available. It is designed for quick and easy single character handwriting input, making it less fatiguing than other styles.
