Wind River Expands Tornado For Home Gateways With DSL Support

ALAMEDA, Calif., December 6, 2001 - Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), a leading provider of software and services for connected smart devices in the Internet age, today announced support for Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) applications in its Tornado® for Home Gateways software platform. The new extension enables developers to build advanced gateway devices for the home and office, combining DSL broadband access with local networking, security, and versatile management capabilities.

The Tornado for Home Gateways DSL Package is part of Wind River's strategy to provide well integrated, vertically tailored solutions to key segments of the networking market. The package is suitable for DSL modems, routers, home gateways, integrated access devices (IADs), and other DSL-based gateway equipment for the home and small office. It can be further enhanced with plug-in additions from Wind River, including security and virtual private network (VPN) capabilities, voice-over-IP (VoIP), advanced routing and bridging protocols, and support for emerging wireless networking technologies such as 802.11b wireless LAN and Bluetooth. Furthermore, THG can be extended with value-added software and hardware from the over 600 members of the WindLink™ Partner Program.

The number of DSL subscribers has passed the 10 million mark worldwide, helped by rapid growth in the Asian and European markets. The technology has proven to be a cost-effective option for businesses to connect to the Internet, as well as an attractive service for home users and telecommuters. Technology advancements are enabling enhanced services such as voice and multimedia applications.

"Wind River has been a strong supplier to DSL equipment manufacturers since the very early stages of this market," said Dave Fraser, group vice president and general manager of Wind River's Networking business unit. "Now, with DSL support in Tornado for Home Gateways, we offer our customers a launching pad to create the most advanced DSL routers and gateway devices."

Recently Wind River awarded its "Cool Customer Design" to Apple for its recently announced AirPort® wireless networking solution for home, school and office. This next generation wireless solution includes the AirPort Base Station which includes Wind River's Tornado® for Home Gateways (THG) integrated development platform technology and WindNet™ RADIUS user access control software.

The Tornado for Home Gateways DSL Package includes a full set of protocol software components supporting the most common DSL architectures, including bridging and IP routing modes as well as PPP-over-Ethernet (PPPoE) client and server. Based on the VxWorks® real-time operating system, the package supports a large selection of hardware platforms, including the PowerPC™, MIPS™, ARM™ and XScale™ microarchitecture processor families. A hardware abstraction API facilitates porting of the DSL software components onto a wide variety of ATM and DSL silicon.

Fraser added, "For developers, versatility and flexibility are key. They don´t want to be constrained to a single hardware and software platform that leaves them at the mercy of their supplier. Wind River offers silicon access, allowing customers to preserve their investment and select the best hardware for their needs. Our platform combines an integrated software foundation with a multitude of expansion options that continues to grow."
