Wind River Ships Wind River Workbench 2.0

ALAMEDA, Calif.—June 21, 2004—Wind River Systems [Nasdaq: WIND], the global leader in device software optimization (DSO), today announced the general availability of Wind River Workbench 2.0, an integrated development environment (IDE) that supports the end-to-end device software development process. Based on Eclipse, the open and widely supported development framework, Wind River Workbench is the first and only cross-platform IDE to support VxWorks, Linux and proprietary, in-house operating systems. With Wind River Workbench 2.0, companies can standardize their development process, reduce overall software costs and get their end product to market faster.

Wind River Workbench is an open, standards-based software development environment that provides:

  • Deep tools capability for every development task

  • Broad coverage across every task and phase in the development process

  • Extensible framework, based on Eclipse, to integrate third-party and in-house tools seamlessly for total customization and scalability

"Since standardizing our device software development process on Wind River Workbench, we have increased development efficiencies, reduced engineering costs and improved both process and product quality. We have also been able to reduce the development cycle by 4-6 months," said Ilan Kepten, vice president of research and development at the Convergent Systems Division of Harmonic Inc., a leading provider of broadband optical networking and digital video systems to the world's largest communications providers. "Wind River's IDE allowed us to integrate the development process across remote sites, significantly improving developer productivity."

"Companies are demanding a development environment that supports multiple projects, target platforms, hosts, architectures and languages. They also want the efficiencies gained by using that same environment throughout the development process," said Dave Fraser, chief marketing officer for Wind River. "Wind River Workbench is the foundation of a comprehensive device software strategy, enabling our customers to build and run software better, faster, with greater reliability and ultimately lower costs."

On June 30, Wind River and Red Hat with Todd Brackett, president and CEO of the PTR Group, will host a Webinar about "Getting Started With Linux for Device Software Applications." Developers and project managers using VxWorks, Linux or in-house operating systems will learn how they can use Wind River Workbench to increase efficiencies throughout the development process.
