NEC Electronics America and Wind River Systems Announce Hardware/Software Development Agreement to Ease Embedded Systems Design

Santa Clara and Alameda, Calif.--Sept. 16, 2003-- NEC Electronics America, Inc. and Wind River Systems, Inc. today announced that customers purchasing NEC Electronics' RockHopper™ development kits, featuring its VR Series™ MIPS-based microprocessors, will receive a free 30-day trial of Wind River Systems' visionPROBE II hardware-assisted software development tools. Customers can use the RockHopper development kits to evaluate Wind River's debugging and programming tools and their range of options and features, which are now available for NEC Electronics' VR Series microprocessors. Offering Wind River's tools with NEC Electronics' RockHopper development kits will enable greater productivity for software and hardware developers.

"Our commitment to facilitating embedded product design and development for our customers led to this agreement. By enabling our customers to evaluate Wind River's feature-rich hardware and software debugging tools, we are making it easier for them to reduce their time to market," said George Wang, general manager, standard LSI solutions strategic business unit, NEC Electronics America. "NEC Electronics' VR Series microprocessors have contained hardware debugging capabilities for many years. Being able to take advantage of these features for embedded products has always been a competitive advantage for our customers. We are leveraging our long-standing working relationship with Wind River to extend our capabilities and benefits to our customers."

"Our visionICE II and visionPROBE II tools, coupled with our hardware-optimized debuggers, provide fast, feature-rich and flexible debugging capabilities for embedded microprocessors, and by combining them with NEC Electronics America's RockHopper kit, we can also offer our customers access to a highly flexible, proven development system," said Michel Genard, general manager, Hardware-Assisted Tools Division, Wind River Systems. "NEC Electronics America customers are in turn provided with a robust, well-supported, N-Wire tools option for debugging and programming."

The RockHopper kits enable the development and testing of peripheral hardware, device drivers and software applications. The kits use operating systems such as VxWorks®, Windows® CE or Linux®. In addition, GNU tools and other relevant software are also provided by NEC Electronics America for compatibility and add-on value. The RockHopper development platform supports the VR7701™, VR5500™, VR5432™ and VR4131™ microprocessors.

Wind River visionICE II and
visionPROBE II Hardware Development Tools
visionICE II is a fully integrated hardware-assisted software development tool that addresses the entire product development cycle--from board bring-up, to debug, to production test. In addition, visionICE II is flexible by design; support for additional processors is as simple as changing the personality module and updating a license key. The visionPROBE II is a robust, yet cost effective hardware-assisted debugging and test tool used by system developers and software engineers in any phase of the product development lifecycle. visionICE II and visionPROBE II are optimized for support of VxWorks and WIND RIVER®PLATFORMS, but also provide the flexibility to debug any application.
