Wind River Software and Services Accelerate the Development of Avayas Java Enabled IP Screen Phone

ALAMEDA, Calif., June 17, 2002 - Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), a leading provider of software and services for connected devices, today awarded its "Cool Customer Design" award to Avaya Inc. (NYSE:AV) for its development of the upgradeable, Java-enabled 4630 IP Screenphone. By using a combination of Wind River's products and development services including the JWorks PersonalJava environment and Information Appliance Framework, Avaya was able to quickly deliver extensive phone features and functionality, along with a high level of reliability and voice quality.

"We chose Wind River because we knew we could get reliable and leading-edge software components, as well as premier expert development services necessary to get our product to market quickly," said Emil Stefanacci, research and development manager for Avaya's 4630. "We are extremely pleased to have been chosen for this Cool Customer Award for our PersonalJava enabled IP Screen Phone. With Wind River's software and services, we were able to incorporate a wide array of features and functionality into the product, while preserving the necessary ease of use that delivers a productive end-user experience."

"By leveraging the technology and features of the Information Appliance Framework (IAF), Avaya was able to rapidly develop and deploy their latest product. Utilizing the IAF's JWorks PersonalJava environment, Avaya was able to field a feature-rich, standards-based product," said Sayeed Choudhury, director of market development for the Digital Consumer group of Wind River's Networks business unit.

The PersonalJava application environment lets Avaya customers develop and deploy custom applications specific to their company's needs, augmenting the robust turnkey applications already pre-developed by Avaya. The phone has a full-color, touch-sensitive VGA screen that displays Web content, call status, and directory data. Other innovative features include a full duplex speakerphone, headset jack, five-fixed feature buttons, message waiting indicator, 10/100BaseT Ethernet connection, and an integrated Ethernet hub for connecting a PC through the phone.

"In augmenting Avaya's own internal development effort with Wind River engineers that have extensive knowledge of PersonalJava, embedded operating systems, device drivers, and connectivity protocols, Ayava's development team was able to focus on their core value-added application components," stated Steve Christian, director of marketing for Wind Rivers Services business unit. The internal development combined with the time to market advantages of leveraging the IAF hardware and software components, such as the HTML browser from WindLink partner IceSoft, dramatically reduces the development lifecycle."
