ALAMEDA, CA — December 18, 2007 — Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:WIND), the global leader in Device Software Optimization (DSO), has been named winner of the Frost & Sullivan 2007 European Automotive Software Company of the Year Award, which recognizes industry excellence based on numerous criteria including business development, competitive strategy and leadership within a particular Frost & Sullivan Industry Research Group (IRG).

Wind River was judged on predetermined criteria including market potential, new market penetration, proof of growth and combined operations efforts. The judging process included interviews with market participants, customers and suppliers along with extensive secondary and technology research. Wind River's efforts were then analyzed based on the number of new customers, new segments and commitment to business expansion coupled with market growth. Frost & Sullivan selected Wind River for its outstanding management, high growth and positive social and economic impact on local and national communities and customers. Exceptional customer service has also been noted as crucial to success, coupled with the ability to combine technology and successful strategic initiatives. Wind River also demonstrated both superior market growth skills through significant gains in the market during the research period.

"Wind River's distinctive, cutting-edge technology helps customers define and develop high quality, reliable systems," said Niveditha Srinivasan, Research Associate, Frost & Sullivan. "Proven technical strengths, strong relationships with systems suppliers and an active, reputed role in the automotive embedded software market make Wind River a deserving recipient of the 2007 Frost & Sullivan Company of the Year Award in the European automotive software market."

"We are honored to be named the Frost & Sullivan 2007 European Automotive Software Company of the Year," said Chris Ditzen, General Manager, Wind River Automotive Solutions. "Wind River's focus is to create value for customers by combining our ability to develop innovative solutions with our expertise in the automotive software industry. The company's commitment to delivering quality solutions to meet our customers' evolving requirements is proven by our leadership in Linux-based solutions for the automotive market. Our highly skilled sales force along with our field engineering team spend quality time with customers to understand their needs."

In recent years, automotive software has become very complex due to the growing number of features that must be integrated in passenger car devices. Key drivers of this increased complexity include:

  • Convergence of consumer electronics and automotive devices

  • Enhanced capabilities to improve vehicle safety, including heads-up displays and car-to-car communication systems

  • Exponential cost increases for new in-vehicle device development

Wind River draws from its expertise and solutions for such adjacent markets as mobile handsets, digital video and aerospace & defense to design innovative solutions to these fundamental changes in the automotive market. In the automotive supply chain, Wind River acts as a software supplier, providing solutions to all major tier-one suppliers and original equipment manufacturers, including Bosch, Siemens VDO Automotive AG, BMW, Daimler AG, Delphi Corporation, Ford Motor Company, Toyota and General Motors Corporation. In addition, the Vehicle Infrastructure Integration Consortium (VII-C) recently chose Wind River's Linux as a runtime and development tool to develop an onboard equipment (OBE) prototype. The VII-C is an initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation aiming to improve vehicle safety and enable standard-based vehicle-to-vehicle communication. All of the major OEMs such as BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Ford Motor Company, and General Motors Corporation are a part of the consortium.

Wind River provides two choices for runtime technologies that serve as the basis for its software platform -- its proprietary VxWorks real-time operating system (RTOS) or an open source Linux solution specifically enhanced for automotive devices. In addition, the company offers its Workbench development suite—a comprehensive set of development tools, compilers and on-chip debuggers—pre-integrated with its runtime technologies. Further, Wind River maintains strategic partnerships with suppliers, middleware vendors, silicon vendors and service providers to ensure customers receive complete, pre-integrated and standards-based solutions that will immediately impact their development lifecycle.
