Wind River, Motorola Create Integrated Platform For Next-Generation Networking for Faster Time to Market, Longer Time in Market

ALAMEDA, Calif., January 16, 2001 - Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), a leading provider of software and services for smart devices in the Internet age, today announced a cooperative development agreement with Motorola's (NYSE:MOT) C-Port™ Corporation, a company that pioneered the development of high-end, fully programmable network processors. The two companies will extend their existing relationship by offering systems designers a rich platform for the development of next generation networking components so that network device manufacturers can bring products to market faster and give them longer time in market.

Under this agreement, Wind River and C-Port will develop a reference design switch support package to integrate the C-Port C-5™ Network Processor with Wind River's Tornado® for Managed Switches (TMS) 2.0 product line. The new platform meets the needs of Gigabit Ethernet and SONET-based Optical Switches for Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN) applications and other advanced networking technologies.

The C-Port C-5 Network Processor, part of Motorola's Smart Networks Platform, offers the high-speed processing power necessary for next generation networks while TMS provides a complete set of protocols and applications for Layer 2 and Layer 3 packet processing. Together, the C-5 Network Processor and TMS offer system designers both hardware and software that is easily customized.

"We are pleased to be working with Wind River to integrate the C-5 Network Processor with TMS. Our customers get a very powerful network processor with an easy-to-use C Language programming model in the C-5 Network Processor. The integration of TMS will mean that almost all of their needs for standard protocols and management applications will be fulfilled as well," said Bob Gohn, vice-president of marketing, C-Port Corporation. "The combination of robust Layer 2 Ethernet features and the proven IP capabilities of TMS can support next generation applications like Gigabit Ethernet VLAN services in the metropolitan area network."

"TMS 2.0 can supply 100% of the standard features required in any switching or routing device. This gives our customers the head start they need to develop innovative products," said Dave Fraser, vice president and general manager of Wind River's Networks business unit. "Now customers using the C-5 Network Processor for LAN, MAN and optical networking devices will have completely integrated Layer 2 and 3 management applications and protocols."

About TMS
TMS 2.0 offers advanced quality of service (also known as QoS) features to support sophisticated applications such as Internet telephony (also known as "Voice over IP" or "VoIP") and video conferencing. TMS 2.0, the first off-the shelf solution enabling Layer 3 IP routing, addresses the needs of optical networking and broadband access concentrators as well as enterprise Ethernet switches and routers. TMS enhances the value of the C-Port network processors and associated C-Ware™ communications development environment that allow network device manufacturers to bring products to market faster and give them longer time in market.
