Wind River Tops its Category in Software Development Times 100 List

  • Adoption of a Linux strategy recognized by SD Times 100 as visionary
  • Customer and industry reaction to dual operating system strategy extremely positive

ALAMEDA, Calif., May 20, 2004 - Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: WIND,) the global leader in device software optimization (DSO), today announced that it was named to the SD Times 100. The second annual SD Times 100 list honors leading companies in software development that are “plotting a course for the industry to follow.” Given the highest acknowledgment in its category, editors selected Wind River in recognition of the company’s recent move to open its business model to embrace Linux.

In February, Wind River announced an industry-shifting partnership with Red Hat to develop a Linux distribution specifically for the device software optimization market. Red Hat's Linux will be the foundation of Wind River’s Linux-based Platforms and will be integrated with Wind River's industry-leading development tools, middleware and services. Wind River now supports a dual operating system strategy, and will continue to offer Wind River Platforms based on its market-leading proprietary operating system, VxWorks ® .

"We are thrilled that SD Times has recognized Wind River’s ‘visionary’ leadership position in device software optimization," said John Bruggeman, worldwide vice president of marketing and chief communications officer for Wind River. “Wind River knew that supporting customers on both proprietary and open source architectures was a strategic imperative. This recognition by SD Times, along with the incredibly positive reaction from our customers, is tremendous validation that our decision to partner with Red Hat and embrace Linux was spot on.”

Red Hat is the leading commercial open source Linux company and supports the largest Linux distribution with Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Wind River is the market share leader in commercial device software optimization with its proprietary real-time operating system, VxWorks, and VxWorks based Wind River Platforms. By building Wind River Platforms based on the Red Hat Enterprise Linux, customers will have access to the most widely deployed Linux technology that is fully embraced by the open source community. For the first time, developers will be able to standardize device software development across the enterprise with VxWorks, Linux or both.
