Wind River Introduces Tornado for Industrial Automation

ODVA Meeting, MIAMI, Fla., June 11, 2001 - Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), a leading provider of software and services for connected smart devices, today introduced Tornado® for Industrial Automation, the company's first integrated vertical solution for the industrial measurement and control market. The complete development solution combines Wind River's leading VxWorks® real-time operating system (RTOS) and Tornado® integrated development environment (IDE) with the popular DeviceNet protocol stacks - simplifying and shortening the development cycle and thereby enabling customers to create highly functional and innovative industrial devices.

The announcement is to be made at the Open DeviceNet Vendor Association (ODVA) 7th Annual Meeting. ODVA manages the DeviceNet protocol, which is one of the world's leading device-level networks for industrial automation, and is used in devices such as sensors, motion control devices, displays, controllers, programmable logic controllers, actuators, and many others. According to Frank Wood, secretary and executive director of the ODVA, "More than 40 per cent of end users surveyed by independent industry analysts report choosing DeviceNet over other types of networks. Wind River's support of DeviceNet and their leading market position will provide developers of embedded industrial devices with a significant edge."

"We have been working with Wind River for many years using the VxWorks RTOS and Tornado technology," said Chiaki Itoh, general manager of Yokogawa Electric Corporation's Industrial Automation Systems business division in Tokyo. "Tornado for Industrial Automation marks a significant commitment by Wind River to address our company's industrial-specific requirements. We are looking forward to this industrial solution in order to enable us to bring products to market faster and more efficiently."

"Wind River has been a leading technology provider in the Industrial Measurement and Control market for many years with technology such as the VxWorks RTOS, the Tornado IDE, and our VxDCOM™ product," said Scot Morrison, vice president and general manager of Wind River's Automotive and Industrial business unit. "Tornado for Industrial Automation and the recently announced VxOPC solution have been designed to provide Wind River customers with integrated, industry-specific solutions that enable them to focus on their application-specific value rather than spend time trying to integrate the enabling technologies."

About Tornado for Industrial Automation
Tornado for Industrial Automation is comprised of the Tornado IDE, which includes the VxWorks RTOS, and an implementation of the DeviceNet specification and supporting CAN drivers for the VxWorks RTOS. Tornado for Industrial Automation is designed to shift the focus of embedded industrial device developers from the integration of enabling technologies to the development of the application itself. In addition, other industrial automation products such as the VxOPC development solution can also be used in conjunction with Tornado for Industrial Automation.

Product availability
Tornado for Industrial Automation will be available for the x86 target in August 2001. Additional CPU support will include PPC and ARM.
