Wind River Delivers Software and Services to Power Apple's AirPort Wireless Gateway

ALAMEDA, Calif., November 15, 2001- Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), a leading provider of software and services for connected smart devices, today awarded its "Cool Customer Design" to Apple (Nasdaq:AAPL) for its recently announced AirPort® wireless networking solution for home, school and office. This next generation wireless solution includes the AirPort Base Station which includes Wind River's Tornado® for Home Gateways (THG) integrated development platform technology and WindNet™ RADIUS user access control software.

Apple's award-winning AirPort wireless solution is based on the IEEE 802.11b wireless networking standard, providing fast, wireless connectivity throughout the home, classroom or office. Comprised of AirPort Base Station, AirPort Card and AirPort 2.0 software, the easy-to-use and affordable solution provides shared network access, firewall security and encryption. With two Ethernet ports and Network Address Translation, the device can create a private network in which up to 50 users share a single global network address.

Wind River's THG software platform helped Apple boost the networking performance of the AirPort Base Station and add new features such as RADIUS, which enables schools and businesses to centrally manage user access control.

"The wireless and gateway markets are evolving at a radical pace and Wind River has been providing an operating system and tools to these markets for many years," said Dave Fraser, group vice president and general manager of Wind River's Networks business unit. "The THG integrated platform raises the bar and now provides a more complete foundation for our customers. Apple's selection of Wind River for the AirPort Base Station is a perfect example of how our solution level products are giving customers what they need to bring competitive products to market faster."

"With the introduction of AirPort, the first affordable and easy-to-use IEEE802.11b product, Apple has led the wireless revolution," said Greg Joswiak, senior director of hardware product marketing at Apple. "Including key technologies from great companies like Wind River have enabled us to take the new AirPort Base Station to the next generation with an even more powerful and flexible architecture."
