Wind River Selected by KUKA Robotics for Use in ROBOCOASTER

  • Wind River's VxWorks General Purpose Platform is providing real-time acceleration and torque monitoring capabilities for KUKA's robotic rollercoaster
  • With Wind River, KUKA successfully installed more than 35,000 robotic controller systems worldwide

Alameda, Calif. - July 20, 2004 - Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: WIND), the global leader in device software optimization (DSO), today announced that its VxWorks® General Purpose Platform is the device software foundation for the latest innovation in the amusement business, the ROBOCOASTER. Developed by KUKA Robotics, one of the world's leading manufacturers of industrial robots, the ROBOCOASTER is the first passenger robot to combine almost complete freedom of motion with the high dynamics of an industrial robot. With Wind River's industry leading device software at its core, the ROBOCOASTER features built-in, real-time acceleration and torque monitoring to ensure safe and reliable operation, even during extreme movements.

By leveraging Wind River's VxWorks General Purpose Platform, running on a standard, commercial PC, KUKA developed a cost-effective, efficient robot controller. This controller is deployed in more than 35,000 industrial robotic units worldwide. KUKA's ROBOCOASTER units are currently being installed in amusement parks in both the United States and Legoland, Germany.

"Our industrial robots continue to prove themselves in markets where safety and reliability are paramount," said Martin Kuhnen, global general industry specialist, KUKA Roboter. "Wind River's device software plays a critical role in keeping our customers safe and our system performing at peak levels."

The ROBOCOASTER includes a PC-based control to enable a high degree of flexibility. The double passenger robotic arm is made of high-quality aluminium and stands some 22 feet tall by 37 feet wide. The ROBOCOASTER features programmable ride sequences and durations and can be constructed in a variety of combinations to meet customer requirements.

"The ROBOCOASTER is the latest example of Wind River technology helping drive innovation within the industrial market," said Michel Genard, vice president, platforms marketing for Wind River. "By providing a reliable system that can monitor performance in real-time, we have been an integral part of the creation of the first viable robotic entertainment platform."
