TELEMATICS DETROIT 2014, Detroit, Mich. – June 4, 2014 – Wind River®, a world leader in delivering software for intelligent connected systems, announced that it is working with TTTech to develop safety-related electronic control units (ECUs) based on networked multi-core system-on-chips (SoCs) for advanced automotive applications, such as autonomous driving. Wind River contributes as a key software partner and provides its VxWorks® real-time operating system (RTOS) — conforming to the ISO 26262 safety standard — for the new ECU platform.

TTTech selected VxWorks to host several safety-related software components side by side with non-safety related components in the overall system architecture. The ECU is designed for use in advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including autonomous driving and other automotive video camera–based vision applications. The ECU can be connected to multiple cameras and features deterministic Ethernet networking capabilities, including TTTech's TTEthernet® switch technology supporting 100 Mbit/s as well as 1 Gbit/s.

TTTech is a leading supplier of networking solutions based on time-triggered technology and modular safety platforms, and its technologies are used in various industries such as automotive, aerospace, off-highway, energy production, railway and industrial process automation. For example, TTTech has worked on the new ADAS platform for Audi for innovative functions such as piloted driving and parking.

"The role of software is growing as automotive systems get more sophisticated and as the Internet of Things demands new levels of connectivity and intelligence. Automotive companies must add innovation while maintaining the necessary levels of safety. The issue of safety is especially paramount as capabilities such as autonomous driving become a reality," said Georg Doll, vice president and general manager of worldwide automotive solutions at Wind River. "Wind River and TTTech are working together to help car manufacturers get to market faster with high quality and innovative offerings. Our innovative software technology coupled with world-class services and global support help customers better manage the highly detailed requirements, complicated software integration, and intricate project planning associated with this industry."

"The automobile is evolving to include greater connectivity and increased capabilities within safety-related areas and driver assistance systems, such as autonomous driving. This is making the software integration process more challenging than ever," said Georg Niedrist, director of TTTech Automotive. "Given the complex nature of the automotive environment, it is beneficial to work with an expert like Wind River who has the knowledge and proven technologies for this industry. Working with Wind River, TTTech delivers a state-of-the-art operating system to our OEM customers."

VxWorks is a high-performance RTOS tuned for both determinism and responsiveness. The latest VxWorks innovations include a modular, future-proof architecture that separates the OS kernel from applications and other packages, allowing for bug fixes and new feature updates with minimal rework, testing, or recertification. Additionally, the enhanced multicore safety scheduler enables time, resource and space partitioning for different criticality applications to run side-by-side and still meet safety standards. VxWorks is a trusted platform with a proven track record in safety- and security-certified environments.

Additionally, certain modules of the TTTech ECU platform require Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) certification of the ISO 26262 Functional Safety for Road Vehicles standard. Meeting the various ASIL levels of safety measures requires exceptional rigor in development. Drawing from decades of embedded software and automotive experience, Wind River can provide customers with expertise across a variety of areas, not only in in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) but also safety, security, and real-time telematics.

Beyond VxWorks and specialized services, the Wind River automotive portfolio also includes Wind River Platform for Infotainment to address multimedia and connectivity; technologies such as iOS connectivity, fastboot, Audio Video Bridging (AVB) Android, GENIVI expertise and solutions, Tizen integration services, Security Profile for Wind River Linux and tools such as Wind River Diab Compiler, Wind River Simics® simulation, and virtualization technologies. This diverse expertise and comprehensive portfolio allows Wind River to support the auto industry in virtually any project, from infotainment and telematics to digital cluster display projects.
