Wind River Chosen to Deliver Software and Services to SONICblue's Revolutionary ReplayTV 4000 Digital Video Recorder
SONICblue's ReplayTV 4000 lets consumers store up to 320 hours of video programming. Users can then share video content between multiple ReplayTV 4000 units in the home over the home network or use the broadband connection to send those files to friends who also own a ReplayTV 4000 outside the home. Billed as the "world's first home video server", the ReplayTV 4000 can also be used to store photos and home movies. SONICblue chose to use off-the-shelf Wind River software to meet its own development deadlines and external adoption efforts.
Forrester Research predicts that 46.7 million homes throughout the U.S. will have broadband access through either DSL or cable modems by 2005. Technology experts predict that broadband connections to the home will be one of the fastest growing markets over the next five years. Each broadband connection will require a residential gateway or other home device to decode and distribute the broadband signals, bringing the market for this type of equipment to $5 billion by 2005, according to recent research by Cahners In-Stat Group.
"SONICblue has quickly brought a reliable product to market in a very competitive marketplace," said David Sheaffer, senior director of business development and marketing of Wind River's Platform business unit. "The seamless integration of the VxWorks RTOS and Tornado IDE made it easy for SONICblue to meet its time to market window. The reliability of our software and our ability to quickly and effectively deliver this technology to companies like SONICblue further enables a world of connected smart devices."
"Wind River's technology solution offered the complete package of software and development tools, as well as enhanced stability and the essential components needed to support the online capabilities of our new ReplayTV 4000," said Jeff Hastings, vice president of ODM, SONICblue. "Our revolutionary new ReplayTV home entertainment product clearly raises the bar for DVR-enabled devices with its numerous network-enabled features. The introduction of the ReplayTV 4000 is another example of our commitment to assemble the key components of the connected home of the future, where digital video and audio entertainment can be easily enjoyed in any room at any time."
