Wind River to Enable Virtualization for Devices with Introduction of Scalable Hypervisor
| Introduces Industry’s Most Comprehensive Multicore Software Solution |
|
ALAMEDA, Calif. — June 16, 2008 — Wind River Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: WIND), the global leader in Device Software Optimization (DSO), today introduced the industry's most comprehensive multicore software solution for device development. Wind River's multicore software solution will help companies solve complex business challenges by taking advantage of multicore processing and virtualization. In connection with today's announcement, Wind River announced that it will introduce a scalable hypervisor that will enable virtualization for devices across a broad range of vertical markets, including networking, industrial and consumer devices. The ability to virtualize hardware allows multiple operating environments to share underlying processing cores, memory and other hardware resources. Virtualization presents the opportunity for device manufacturers to reduce hardware costs and power consumption, leverage existing intellectual property (IP) and innovate by adding new capabilities to existing devices. Wind River's hypervisor will incorporate the same rigorous design practices and technology that Wind River uses for its safety critical and security sensitive products, such as Multiple Independent Levels of Security (MILS). This heritage in developing safe, secure and reliable products for mission-critical aerospace and defense applications ensures a highly robust and high-performance hypervisor. Wind River's hypervisor will be tightly integrated with VxWorks® and Wind River Linux, and can support a variety of other operating systems. It will be available for early access in August 2008. With the introduction of virtualization, Wind River's comprehensive multicore software solution will consist of three pillars:
"Wind River is the only company that can provide such a comprehensive multicore approach and level of flexibility to take advantage of multicore and virtualization," said Tomas Evensen, chief technology officer at Wind River. "This level of flexibility will help 'future proof' customers' investments as new, more advanced hardware comes to market and ensure the flexibility to create differentiating devices both in the short and long term."
