Product Description
Cyclone's PCI-983 is an ATM OC-3 controller that uses on-board intelligence to off-load host processing and increase host PCI bus and memory bandwidth utilization. The I/O processor on the PCI-983 reduces host interrupt load and can run communications protocols, reducing the I/O processing work load of the host processor. The PCI-983 also allows the ATM SAR (segmentation and reassembly) MAC to operate out to local memory, allowing higher-speed transfers to take place on the host PCI bus. The ATM SAR performs memory reads and writes in the 48-byte payload of the ATM cells. By directing these transfers to a local memory, complete packets can be DMA-transferred to host memory from the local memory in large bursts, greatly increasing the available host memory bandwidth.
The PCI-983 supports Cyclone's IPOA driver, a VxWorks-enhanced network driver that allows Cyclone's CompactPCI-based intelligent ATM controllers to carry IP packets over an ATM network. The driver emulates an Ethernet device to the host VxWorks system and fully functions as an ATM network client when attached to an ATM switch with ATM ARP server capability. In addition, the board supports Wind River's Tornado development environment.
